http://www.waggleroom.com/ - We Have FedEx Cup FEVER!
I've been doing some thinking on this subject because I've been on the road for the last day or so. (I'm in Vermont!) And I've come to my final conclusion about this whole LPGA English requirement.
After the jump, take a look at it .
Yesterday, my initial gut reaction on this LPGA English requirement business is that it was necessary, but hypocritical. (Some folks who ...

LPGA Tour Commissioner Carolyn Bivens has taken on the critics of the so-called Asian Invasion of young players. Those young players have dominated the second half of the LPGA Tour season after the law firm of Ochoa, Sorenstam, and Creamer dominated the first part.
Bivens has come out in defense of Asian players and said that their infusion to the LPGA Tour has not had a negative net ...

8/25 - The show starts by talking about The Barclays and Vijay's 2nd win of the year. It's time to talk Ryder Cup in light on Darren Clarke's Dutch Tour win. Danny Lee was incredible at Pinehurst #2 in the US Amateur and we'll discuss. Finally, a nice 54 hole scramble on the LPGA Tour resulted in a Cristie Kerr win.

Sergio Garcia appeared more gracious in defeat this week at the Barclays, compared to the PGA Championship.
He lost to Vijay Singh, one of his good friends on Tour, at Ridgewood. He lost to Paddy Harrington, with whom he shares an icy relationship, at the PGA Championship (and 2007 Open Championship, which started the whole thing).
It is startling to hear the kind words from Garcia ...

I loved Ridgewood as host for the Barclays this weekend. As it turns out, so did the players. (Not that they have a good eye for architecture, but this counts for something.)
The Tour may want to come back there for another edition of the tournament.
"It's obvious from the players' reactions and the success of the event that we certainly would like to come back here," said ...

We are one week into Playoffs v2.0 and everyone is complaining already. Vijay Singh managed his way to victory for the fourth time at the Barclays - first time at Ridgewood CC - and skyrocketed from 7th to 1st in the FedEx Cup standings. Equally notable are the performances of Matt Goggin and Kevin Sutherland, who moved way up the leader board.
Now, the Players are complaining ...

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of posting this weekend. I was in the Windy City, getting to know Chicago a little better. It was the first time I've been there since covering Olympia Fields in 2003. I love the city and was glad to get to see Wrigley field, too!
Some great golf action this past weekend, so we will have plenty to touch on this week.

2009 LPGA Priority List
We've been wondering with bated breath what will replace the exempt/non-exempt/conditional status system on the LPGA Tour ever since we first heard rumors of a change in the works. Well, some of us. In any case, the change was actually made just before July 4th. But I just caught wind of it the other day, thanks to an eagle-eyed commenter at Mostly Harmless. ...

An article in the East Valley Tribune looks at the hard times faced by FBR, a DC based capital management firm and sponsor of the FBR Open - arguably the coolest event that isn't a major.
In February, FBR laid off 75 of its 775 employees. Last week, another cutback reduced its work force by another 70 employees, which represents about a 20 percent reduction for the year.
Add in three ...

Hunter Mahan fired 62 to take a four shot lead through the first round of the Barclays at Ridgewood CC. He had eight birdies, one eagle, and a bogey. He is looking for a Ryder Cup spot, but currently sits on the outside looking in at 12th in the standings. Many have said that his comments about the PGA of America and the Ryder Cup may ultimately compel Captain Zinger to ...

This is a double post - which will be rare, but I think necessary in this case. I think there is a fun debate in this topic and it's much more likely to happen here at Waggle Room.
Steve Dennis of the PGA Tour and Geoff Shackelford debate the subject on PGATour.com . Dennis is in favor of the current format for a few reasons - each week has meaning, generates a deserving ...

There is an argument to be made that Padraig Harrington is Player of the Year on the PGA Tour. Two majors in a row are tough to deny. He would be a lock were it not for Tiger's performance pre-2nd surgery. But, Harrington has a case that is incomplete. He still has the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup to win the award. If he wins the FedEx Cup, could he then ...

I found this to be a fascinating story out of Pinehurst and the US Amateur. From the News-Observer :
When Brady Exber's final tee shot of the day headed straight for the cup, he raised his arms. When the would-be hole-in-one lipped out, he fell to the ground.
After a second long, grueling day in the heat at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Exber worried that he might have needed ...

The PGA Tour Playoffs kick off tomorrow at Ridgewood CC for the Barclays.
Who is your player/horse for this course AND for the entire series? Leave a comment and let me know. (I promise I will not use it for my fantasy golf team.)

Jon Show at the Sports Business Daily has the report that two official representatives of the golf industry are heading to Beijing to lobby the IOC for golf's inclusion into the games.
Several top executives from the golf industry plan to travel to Beijing this week to begin lobbying the International Olympic Committee to include the sport in the 2016 Olympics.
The IOC limits sports ...

The venerable Brett Avery (it's an inside joke) brings us his usual stat package after the PGA Championship for Golf World. Geoff Shackelford took a look at some of the numbers and gets into an interesting discussion of a comparison of significant data from the 2008 PGA and 1996 US Open .
The discussion is interesting on several different levels. First, it's the same golf ...

We reported earlier in the week that Nick Dougherty was trying to take advantage of the absences of several of his Ryder Cup competition in the SAS Masters on the European Tour . He managed to do just that by finishing in a tie for 2nd, just one shot behind eventual champion Peter Hansen.
He sat on 14th entering the week and it appears that he will not move from that position . ...

Katherine Hull overcame a six shot deficit on the final day of the CN Canadian Women's Open to pick up her first title on the LPGA Tour and become the seventh first time winner this year.
It appeared that Yani Tseng was on her way to victory at Ottawa H&GC. She began the day with a four shot lead over the field. In a stretch from the 3rd to the 12th, Tseng dropped seven ...

The PGA Tour announced a contest today that will allow one lucky person to have a hole of theirs played by about 1000 people per year.
The TOUR is inviting aspiring golf course designers to submit an original, hand-sketched design of the 13th hole on the AT&T Canyons Course [shudder] at TPC San Antonio, which is being designed by renowned architect Pete Dye . Entries will be judged by ...

In an effort to add some extra content, I'm going to post links to listen to my two podcasts whenever they are completed. If it turns out that everyone hates it, I'll stop the practice. But, I figured I would give it a try. Here's this week's show description:
8/14 - We'll kick off the show discussing the Paddy-Sergio duel at the PGA Championship. Kevin Cook, ...
