The Sports Blog Mapping Project

Using Google's nifty Maps API, we have positioned more than 1,500 sports blogs into U.S. and Canadian cities on the map below. The default view is the Pacific Northwest region, all blogs from all sports.

Fun things you can do:
  • Filter by sport and region to find sports teams and cities that are under-represented.
  • Filter by blog ranking to view the geographic concentration of blog power.
  • Zoom in and out using the controls in the top left corner of the map, or just click-n-drag the screen to go from one sports bar mecca to another.
A few notes:
  • Locations are not exact. As you'll see, blogs are simply placed on city centers, or when multiple blogs share the same city, in concentric circles surrounding the center (which explains why many of the Chicago blogs are positioned directly over Lake Michigan).
  • At the initial magnification, blogs will appear to be squished together. Zoom in using the slider on the left to get individual details.
  • The map is incomplete. As noted, more than 1,500 of our 2,000 ranked blogs are placed, but locations for the rest are unknown, hidden, or not applicable (for group blogs like FanHouse or FreeDarko). If you notice any errors or omissions, please shoot us a note.
  • Viewing all blogs at once can be taxing for many computers - if you experience difficulty trying to load the full list, narrow your focus to a specific region, sport, or ranking group.
  • Baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer blogs are represented with an icon. General sports blogs (and all others) appear as blue balls.

How we did it - assigning blogs to cities:
  • Blogs covering a certain school or team were placed in that corresponding metropolitan area.
  • Published locations on "about" pages or real-world anecdotes.
