Finding Clutch Players on the Celtics
Published 19 days ago by ManchvegasBob at Celtics 17
If you’ve been following Celtics discussion groups lately, you know that filling the hole that Posey’s departure has left has been the major preoccupation this summer. As in, “Who the heck is going to play the back-up at the No. 3/4 position with Posey gone?”
No worries! Ainge essentially responded to that question the day James Posey signed with the Hornets, by saying he would be replaced by committee (see Globe article, Celtics17 also posted a decent SF by Committee article too). At the time of Posey’s departure, Ainge had no particular free agent in mind, and ...

Basketball Sabermetrics?
Published 6/4/2008 by Pizza Cutter at Statistically Speaking
Yeah, they do advanced statistical analysis in basketball as well. You might call it basketball sabermetrics, but Eli Witus from Count the Basket prefers “APBRmetrics.” Basketball has its own numbers that in which it is awash, but are those the right numbers by which to assess a player or a team? I “sat down” with Eli to ask a few questions about how it’s done in basketball and what Sabermetric folk might learn from looking at the numbers in another sport.
Tell us a little bit about Eli the basketball (and sports in general) fan. Where ...

Iverson, defensive specialist?
Published 4/30/2008 by Adam at Fan-tastic?
... who can't block shots (Pryzbilla)... IVERSON?! I'm sure people will slag this stat as "best flopper"; in fact, 82games made that joke themselves. But I'm still pretty impressed that a soon-to-be 33-year-old 165 pound guard would crack the top 10. Obviously you're tough if you have a spiderweb neck tattoo, but given that so many blue-chip scorers mail it in on defense as soon as they hit their late 20s, ranking in the top 10 in charges drawn is still impressive. Complete list here. Technorati Tags: ...

The Bobcats MVP of 2007-08
Published 4/18/2008 at Queen City Hoops
When John Hollinger was breaking down the Mike Bibby trade for ESPN a couple of months ago, he made a remark that caught my eye: A basic rule of thumb is that every additional point of PER is worth one additional win over 2,000 minutes. While PER is not a perfect measurement, due to its inability to properly guage defensive contributions, it still serves a role in analyzing player performance. So, when I started thinking about how to guage which Bobcat was most valuable this year, an easy way to do so jumped out me: Calculate the wins each player's performance (and mintues) added to ...
Ranking Iguodala
Published 4/2/2008 by Brian at Depressed Fan
Earlier today SML and I had a friendly disagreement in the comments section over at Cobra Brigade over where Andre Iguodala ranks among the elite small forwards in the league. He put a bunch of offensive guys ahead of Iguodala, I disagreed, so I tried to come up with a fair way to gauge a player's impact on both ends of the floor. As Tray can tell you, I'm not a huge fan of PER, because I think in a vacuum it doesn't take defense into account (blocks and steals can be misleading indicators). What I came up with was a way to use PER in some context. Namely, looking at a player's PER as compared to ...
Blogging and Newspapers, a Lesson in How Not to Brand and Market
Published 3/13/2008 by Mark Cuban at Blog Maverick
Much is being made of my decision to ban bloggers from the locker room. To me its pretty amusing. In particular I find it amusing that there is a presumption that if a blogger works for a big company, they must be better. The logic extends to the conclusion that if only I would evaluate the different blogs and make a qualitative selection, then big newspaper bloggers would be chosen as among the best. Let me just say, that should I go that direction, that I find quite a few individual bloggers to be far better than those earning a salary to blog. ...

... of the key things they look at. Wham, I was sold on the stat and you can tell because I use it a ton. I just like things that tell us about things other than pts, rebs, assts, FG%--they're all offensive stats. For me, +/- can be random in a single game (when you follow it play by play, it's amazing how much one three-pointer changes everybody's +/- for the game), but man, if you're piling up -10s every night, I don't care what you're scoring, you must be failing your team somehow. 82games.com is another site I like, and again, it's for defensive insight, mostly. You've got to ...
