If Only This Meant Something…Besides the 40-1 Thing

... looking for some chink in Cleveland’s armor, some undiscovered weakness. And I thought I’d found one: the Cavs are near the bottom of the league (26th) in terms of the percentage of their shots that come from in close. They are a team of mere jump-shooters! They are nothing but a souped-up version of the Bulls! ...

The Bulls just can't seem to hold a lead, and when they get into a situation where a big shot will win a game, they can't convert. A lot of this seems due to Derrick Rose's inexperience. According to the clutch stats at 82games.com , no Bulls player is shooting 50 percent from the field in last five minutes of close games this season. 17. (17) ...

Advanced Stats For Babblers
Published 4/7/2009 by Steve Weinman at CelticsBlog
A Daily Babble Production In yesterday's philosophical musing about statistical analysis in basketball, I pledged to provide a guide to the measures used in this space that leave the realm of the traditional box score. This is that document.  Since I used about a week's worth of your allotted Babble reading time with yesterday's ruminations, let's get right to it with our glossary of stats currently in common use at Babble Central. Lebron James in the Clutch

[image] I just need to start by saying thank goodness for 82games.com .  Their statistical analysis is some of the most intriguing if not the best available on the Internet.  I use that qualifier as I am guessing the statisticians that Mark Cuban has working for him in Dallas come up with some interesting stuff that isn’t available to the general public.  Anyway, 82games.com has come up with a section on their site dedicated to clutch stats.  These stats are compiled in game situations in the 4th quarter or overtime with less than five minutes remaining and neither team is ahead by more than five ...

Inspecting the MVP Candidates -- A Roundup
Published 3/24/2009 at ESPN.com - TrueHoop
Graydon Gordian, of the TrueHoop Network's 48 Minutes of Hell, has spent some quality time rounding up MVP opinions from around the League, and writes: My grandfather always told me the two things you should never discuss in public are religion and politics. Youʼll never convince anyone of anything. Iʼm thinking of adding the MVP race to that list. Much like religion and politics, many of the arguments seem sound when discussed on their own terms. Is the MVP the best player in the league? The best player on the best team? The player without whom a team would suffer ...

Lakers March Madness, Round 2
Published 3/21/2009 by kambrothers at Lakers Blog
Some define this month's "madness" as the college roundball tourney being played as we speak. As I said during our recent 710 ESPN podkast , Smush Parke r fancying himself a credible critic of the "Playing With Kobe Bryant Experience" brings new meaning to the phrase "madness." But here at Lakers Blog, we offer our own, highly purple and gold-centric version of March Madness. Round one's results are in the books and here are your winners: Kobe Bryant's fadeaway over Lamar Odom's fashion sense Pau Gasol from the elbow over DJ Mbenga's martial arts Phil Jackson's zen ...

... Enter new basketball statistics. The people I steal from constantly, 82games.com, have created a different way to quantify passing skills. It starts with the classic assist to turnover ratio, which is commonly accepted as an indicator of how effectively a player can pass. Except that turnovers include all sorts of things besides passing. For example, if a player is whistled for travelling or gets the ball stolen while driving to the hoop a turnover would result. So the 82games.com geniuses started tracking something called assist: bad pass ...

It was only after he got it through his head that the game wasn't just about making gorgeous passes - whether for the benefit of teammates' scoring or his own prestidigitational glory - that he ended up scoring 24 a game and taking home MVP trophy #1. That, my friends, isn't ego. It's Superior. So, we return to the central question. How do we measure magic? The answer is, you don't. You describe magic. Maybe someday soon, 82Games will figure out how to break every PG's game down into quanta. Then we can measure magic. ...

It’s no surprise that 72% of our field goal attempts are jumpers (league worst) while the majority of the teams are in the 60-67% range. Only 27% of our shots are classified as being “close” while most teams are over 35%. Now factor in that we shoot 45.7% from the field which is good for a 14th place ranking and you can see why we average 97.56 points per game which ranks 21st in the NBA. In plain English: We take too many jumpers but ...

What we know about Channing basically boils down to "not a good short-spurt player".  Anything else will have to wait until his role gets bigger. Walking the dog makes perfect sense in end-of-game situations where every tick of the clock is as precious as a cheerleader covered in chocolate frosting. But doing it, say, midway through the second quarter...is there any benefit? I guess that, in theory, it saves time on the shot clock. But I can't imagine that it provides much of an advantage over time. Can we get the guys at 82games.com on this?
