What happened today is absolutely tragic. He had his whole life in front of him and pitched a gem of a game last night against the A’s. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this very difficult time. Tags: Tragedy Filed Under: Asides ...

... but he sure threw a gem last night, and looked to have boundless potential. Which makes what happened immediately after the game just that much more shocking and tragic. Sincere condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. Tonight's Angels game has been postponed, obviously, but one presumes this weekend's Boston-Anaheim series will be played as planned, with heavy hearts on both sides. In the mean time, Rich Lederer at Baseball Analysts has re-posted this profile of the then-prospect, written three years ...

Lederer’s Look

... Rich Lederer, of Baseball Analysts, was at last night’s game, and offers his take. We especially liked this question: “Why is it that respected analysts such as those at Baseball Prospectus, Keith Law, Rob Neyer, and our own Patrick Sullivan and Jeremy Greenhouse pick the A’s over the Angels to win the AL West?”  Lederer name sound familiar?  It should. ...

They've taken single game measures like Win Probability Added (the amount any one player contributed to the outcome of each game) and Leverage Index (the degree to which each individual event contributes to the final game outcome) and extended and examined them over the course of an entire season. Championship WPA demonstrates how much each player added to a World Series win at any one time. ...

... is the younger brother of former Dodger J.D. Drew. He was a highly touted prospect and is now starting to turn into the player many thought he could become. Rich Lederer of the great site Baseball Analysts points out that in the second half of '08 Hanley Ramirez hit .282/.414/.495 while Drew managed a .326/.372/.556 line. Yikes. Also, Stephen Drew's comment in Baseball Prospectus' 2009 book reads, "This really is just the beginning for Drew, because his raw talent is unquestionable... We'll keep projecting stardom, and that's on the modest side. If he's a ...

Top 100 Angels: Bobby GRICH #6

#6 - BOB GRICH - 2B (1977 - 1986) Bobby dropped from #4 to #6 on our 2005 Top 100 Angels feature but the words from that compilation all still apply...   The fact of Grich's greatness is best illustrated to me by what happened in his aftermath - Wilfong, McLemore, Johnny Ray for 3 years, Luis Sojo for 2, Lovullo, Reynolds, Easley, Velarde, Alicea, Baughman, and then, in 2000, 14 seasons later, Adam Kennedy. Some Angel fans had plenty to say about the bat and glove of Bobby... The Chronicler: Here's Bobby Grich for you: in 4100 career at-bats with ...

The Baseball Analysts Looks at Payroll Efficiency, 2006-2008
Published 3/2/2009 at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
Each year, I do a look at MLB from the perspective of Marginal Wins/Marginal Payroll, which looks at the efficiency of how each club spends in a given year. Last year, Rich Lederer of Baseball Analysts did this using a different method than MW/MP, and came up with some interesting and thought provoking figures. This year, with a slight nudge from Rob Neyer, it seems, Lederer has done so again, but this time looked at 2006-2008 to see which teams have spent the most efficiently. ...

First up, Myron and I penned an article for Rich Lederer’s fantastic Baseball Analysts website. It ...
