It just so happens lots of interesting things have been dropped onto our desk in recent days, so figured why not share with the loyal readers (all three of you). Without further ado, the linkage: Braden Looper was scratched from another spring start for the Brewers because of a bad oblique.  I wish Braden all the success in the world as a starting pitcher, and would much rather have him (healthy) in Cardinal camp than Joel Pineiro, but doesn’t that non-tender look pretty smart now?  I wouldn’t go so far as to say ...

Gabor's Revenge and Other Rumors

... 40-man roster, the Cubs will sign Paul Gabor Bako for a one year, $750K contract. The Cubs are also said to be weighing offers on Danny Noonan...err, Rich Hill, and looking at adding another bench player such as Juan Uribe that could cover 2B, SS, 3B and possibly 1B. The Cub seem determined to make it virtually impossible for Micah Hoffpauir to make the team out of camp. And if this Peavy deal doesn't happen, the Cubs may try and sign Braden Looper or Randy Wolf, to try and make it virtually impossibe for Sean ...

Randy Wolf Vs. Jon Garland Vs. Braden Looper

... very favorably in range metrics. With Garland relying so much on his defense's ability to convert balls in play into outs, i'm concerned that his ERA might balloon. Overall, Garland's greatest assets are that he's in the prime of his career, he's very durable, and he's never all that bad. However, that doesn't mean he's worth a 10-12 million dollar investment over 3-5 years. Like with Wolf, I think contract demands might be my biggest problem with signing Garland. Braden Looper Looper just converted to a starter in 2007, and has put up an ERA+ of 89 and ...

While his numbers have been on the decline (although still posting power with 20 homers and 72 RBI in ‘08), Millar has always been a great clubhouse leader and could really help in the rebuilding of the team and at a cheap price. 2.) Sign free agent starting pitcher Braden Looper to a two-year, $12.5 million deal. Why Braden Looper you ask? I thought about Jon Garland as he’s an innings eater and ...

Should the Yankees consider Braden Looper?

... possible, given the Yankees' nearly league-worst defense last year and the type of pitcher that Pettitte is, but, even so, the ultimate results are similar. In another statistic that SABR and stats geeks everywhere love, Pettitte's ERA+ was 98 for 2008, while Looper's was 102. Over the course of their careers, Pettitte's is higher-117 to 109, but Looper's career WHIP is lower, 1.35 to Pettitte's 1.36. You can view Pettitte's complete stats here and Looper's here. Dodger Thoughts: Today Is the First Day of the Rest of Your Offseason (Or Maybe Tomorrow Is)

... : I would have urged the Dodgers not to re-sign Casey Blake or Rafael Furcal, but it's too late for that. I would urge them to bring back Derek Lowe, but it seems Lowe wants to return to the east coast. Their biggest need would seem to be another starting pitcher. A short incentive-laden deal for Ben Sheets could pay off big, but that risk is one the team still nursing Jason Schmidt might not be willing to take. On the opposite side of the risk/reward scale, Braden Looper could be a surprisingly solid bargain. Second to that, L.A. could use a legitimate backup catcher. Gregg ...

... Braden Looper, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards selected Looper out of Wichita State with the third pick in the 1995 draft. A closer in college, Looper was shifted to starting duty as a pro, but that experiment soon ended and he returned to the bullpen. After two seasons in the minors, Looper came up to the big club in September 1998, made four appearances, and then got shipped to Florida in a deal for shortstop Edgar Renteria. With the Marlins, Looper embarked on his career as generic middle reliever, although his high draft status probably netted him a few ...

The right-hander needs to get the ball on the ground to be effective. He's turned in two excellent starts against the Cubs this year, which is definitely encouraging going into a critical four-game series. ...
