... 4. Texas - Thinking of bringing a WILL WORK FOR PITCHING sign to the ballpark? Try WILL GROVEL FOR PITCHING. Because it’s fun to make silly predictions: Brandon McCarthy will lead the team in victories. Really like the bats, and we’ve gambled on Andrus in almost all of our fantasy leagues. Saltalamacchia is a cool last name; Salty a great nickname. ...

... Brandon McCarthy, SP Like your old roommate who spent 7 consecutive semesters saying that was the one where he'd graduate, this is finally supposed to be the year McCarthy stays healthy and produces. Likes to talk smack on message boards. Very unlikable. Or am I just saying that so he'll comment on this story? ...

Rangers Burned By Danks Trade
And that's about par for the course:
About eight innings into the White Sox-Twins game Tuesday, after watching former Rangers prospect John Danks throw a two-hit masterpiece, owner Tom Hicks decided to send a text message to a buddy.
"You owe me one big time on Danks," he noted.
"I sure do," came White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf’s reply.
Brandon McCarthy made five starts for the Rangers this year, spending significant time on the DL with injuries to his right forearm and finger ligaments. ...

Dontrelle Willis (0-1, 10.32) vs. Brandon McCarthy (1-1, 4.22)
After a crazy weekend of "will they or won't they play" rainouts in Chicago, the schedule hopefully settles back into normalcy tonight in Texas. Also hoping to settle back into something resembling a major league pitcher is Dontrelle Willis, who makes his first start for the Detroit Tigers since early June.
On his ESPN.com blog today, Rob Neyer detailed the plunge Willis' career has taken, from never having pitched in Triple-A when he was in the ...
Two on Two: 2008 AL West Preview

... Between the dimensions and the weather, trying to keep run scoring down in Arlington during the summer is basically impossible. However, I can say with some confidence that the 2008 Rangers have not assembled an all-star rotation. Kevin Millwood is a solid bounce back candidate, and I think Texas could get some positive contributions from back-end starters Jason Jennings and Gabbard, but when Vicente Padilla and Brandon McCarthy are your #2 and #3 starters, well, you're probably not going ...

... turn your attention now to brandon mccarthy, the chisox farmhand who came up in 2005, the sox' championship year. despite turning in 150 league-average innings over two seasons, mccarthy somehow was judged a failure. never really got a chance, it seems to me. he was traded for the rangers' john danks, a highly touted prospect in his own right. mccarthy remained a league-average performer in texas this year before getting hurt; danks, meanwhile, went 6-13 with a 5.50 era. . . . . one last case from 2007: during the season the braves cut bait on ...
Danks but no Danks

... McCarthy is 24, made his debut in 2005 for the White Sox pitching 10 starts, then moved to the bullpen in 2006. The Rangers traded for him for the rotation, which he had stated was his preference. So far in his short career he has been about league average, in fact his ERA+ is 101. If you look at his numbers on Baseball Reference you’ll see his ERA has gone up and his ERA+ has gone down each year, these trends would be worrying if you didn’t know more than that. In particular, something I have stated several times in the past, is that his ERA since May 1 this year is 3.41, and he has been pitching very well since getting off to a horrible start with his new team. His home run rate has dropped, which is good, but his walks are up and his strikeouts down, which is bad. Worst of all, he’s had a string of injuries which have combined to allow him just 19 starts and 94 innings, and at best he might be ...

... - Sonnanstine was not on his game against the Orioles. A combination of him leaving a few pitches up in the zone and Baltimore bats being thirsty for a win led to a six-run fourth inning that the rookie couldn't bulldog his way out of. He left after 3 2/3 innings and was charged with seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Brandon McCarthy - McCarthy allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings in his last start against the Blue Jays. He didn't have his best stuff, but he managed to pitch his way out of several jams en route to his second consecutive quality start. The 24-year-old is now 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA over his last three outings. McCarthy is 0-1 with an 11.57 in three career appearances against the Athletics.
