Home Run Rate by Pitch Location

... is almost a caricature of a right-handed batter with his highest HR rate region even more down and in than expected. Carlos Pena, on the other hand, mashes outside pitching and the inside half of the zone has surprisingly few HRs. A possible explanation for this pattern could be that Pena just gets very few inside pitches because pitchers know he is a dangerous HR hitter. This shows one problem with my analysis. I am comparing the composite HR rate to a player's raw HRs not adjusted for the number of pitches a player sees in that region. ...

... Yankees for being down on him at the time? Take solace in the fact that there were several other clubs that came to the same conclusion as the Yanks -- and discarded Pena. He was in Texas, Oakland, Detroit and Boston before even coming to the Yanks, and they all felt he was expendable as well; some teams got more value for him than others, as he was traded a couple of times along the way. Before last season's breakout, Pena's best year in the bigs was probably in '04 when he batted .241 but hit 27 HRs and had an OPS+ of 113 . Nothing to sneeze at, but there was nothing to ...

Somebody (and, I have no idea who this might be) bet on Ankiel at 300:1, and it doesn't take much money at those odds to put the books at risk. So they made sure to change it to a completely outrageous price, because they don't want to increase that risk. I am sure they'll be happy to take your action at 10:1 though. 46 under the radar?

... The funny thing is that this is his first big season in 7 years. Clearly he has some nice pop in his bat that can account for 20-25 home runs a year (stats) but to hit 46 in just 148 games in 2008 doesn’t leave me with a good feeling. Is this the case of a below-average slugger hitting his prime a little late (29) or just the results of Juice, HGH, or other supplements cheaters use? ...

... , Arizona Diamondbacks. American League Comeback Player of the Year Carlos Pena , Tampa Bay Devil Rays Pena was released twice last year. The first time it was because the Tigers gave up on him. The second time it was because he was stuck in the minors with the Yankees and he exercised an option in his contract. He finished the year playing 18 games with the Red Sox, hitting 1 home run in 33 at-bats. This year, he signed with the Devil Rays but wasn't even guaranteed a spot on the opening day roster. After Greg Norton got injured on the last day of spring training, Pena made the team. Pena went on to finish the year in the top 5 in the AL in home runs, RBI's, walks, on-base percentage, slugging average and OPS (on-base plus slugging). And Pena's 46 home runs obliterated the Ray's single season home run record of 34. Not bad for a guy nobody wanted. Close but no cigar: ...

Nine innings: 09.04.06

... 1. With his spot-on Big Papi imitation tonight, Carlos Pena (of the Haverhill Penas) lived the common dream of New England kids through the ages: to hit a game-winning home run at Fenway Park. He's one of us, and it was chill-inducing to see how much he savored it. Long regarded as one of the nicest people in the game, reacted with genuine joy, as if the moment's realization took him back to the day he first imagined it. "Do you know how many times I'm doing this in my backyard? It's amazing," he said. "I've dreamed of this since I was 12 years old." Now, feel free to accuse me of getting caught up in the good vibes of the night, but I do hope there is a spot on the roster for Pena next season. Frankly, I don't quite understand why he hasn't been able to hold down a big-league gig. He's a terrific first baseman, has a selective eye (though he does strike out a ton), has legitimate power (he walloped 27 homers in '03), and ...
