... week in baseball history: March 1-7, 2009 by Richard Barbieri March 06, 2009 On March 5, 2009 the second World Baseball Classic kicked off as Japan shut out China. The clear favorites in this year's pool are Japan and Korea, two countries with well-known baseball histories, but today Richard looks at less baseball-oriented Asian countries. Asked to name an Asian baseball player, most fans would probably come up with someone from Japan. Ichiro . Hideki Matsui . Daisuke Matzusaka . [image] Have you ever been to Japan? It's a small country with too many people. But, putting that aside, it's a great country (do you sense a hint of political correctness here?) with many very nice people. One of the best parts about Japan, if not the very best, is they play a lot of baseball there. Lots of it. We know what it's like when we "import" their stars, guys like Dice-K (winner) and ...

Daisuke Matsuzaka Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched a gem last night. Oh I know it's not what may normally be considered a gem but a gem it was. I am amazed how many national writers can't see the forest through the trees when it comes to Dice-K. All they see is the walks - take Lee Jenkins article on SI.com this morning as an example. Jenkins talks about the walks but he never mentions once the reason for the nibbling. Not once! Well let me explain. Dice-K nibbles because he will not give up a home run. He'd rather nibble on a 3-2 count with men on ...

It's possible, but considering Dice-K's reputation for running up pitch counts and the fact that he averaged less than six innings per start this year (167.2 innings in 29 starts), it really doesn't matter. No, Matsuzaka is still loved, but it's at arms-length, as Sox fans try and figure out whether or not embracing might lead to a cartoonish playoff explosion. Past circumstances don't help. Matsuzaka went 2-1 in the playoffs as the Red Sox marched to the World Series last year, but it was ...

I’ll admit. I’m nervous. Hearing the words “Josh Beckett” and “Scratched” in the same sentence made my shorts slightly browner. That and the fact that the Angels bullpen is kind of sort of awesome… And Dice-K will probably turn game 2 into a battle of the Bullpens… which mean a Red Sox loss. I am not brimming with confidence right now, but I’m still hopefull. If Lester can steal a game in Anaheim… I’m sorry… Los Angeles of Anaheim… the Sox might have a shot. His ERA (4.40) was below the league average, and he had 201 strikeouts in 204 innings. That’s good. He’s still only 27, coming to the U.S. younger than a lot of players from Japan who come over. So he still has a lot of room to improve. Matsuzaka is scheduled to start the ...
