That certainly looks like a strong possibility , since Dustin Pedroia's remarkable season coupled with a darth of traditional MVP candidates in the AL has opened up the possibility. The announcement of the winner is expected at about 2 p.m. today. Ortiz , hardly an O's nemesis at the time, collected two hits in five at-bats and finished the season batting .282 with 10 home runs and 63 RBIs. The O's were still losing back then, as their 63-75 record attests, but the team hadn't yet started its tradition of late summer swoons; the Birds won 8 of their final 10 games to close out the 2000 season. His jump between 2003 and 2004 was the closest call, as Ortiz went from 44 percent better than league average to 45 percent; last year he was actually 10 percent better than he was in 2006 despite hitting 19 fewer homers, as a result of a surge in doubles (29 to 52) and big spike in batting average (.287 to .332). Ortiz's streak will likely end this season, unless he goes absolutely berserk over the season's last two-plus monthswhich given Big Papi's history in the Hub cannot be entirely ruled out. Drew, which is subject for next week. Pedroia s success with the bat might be as important as any production on the team. While he doesn t put up the production numbers of a power guy, he has made up for Julio Lugo , at least for a few months there in the middle. Pedroia shows a few characteristics that might put him in the, ahem, special cateory: 1. He was able to mentally overcome a pathetic April. 2. He can hit pitches thrown anywhere high, low, outside and inside. He s out of the Nomar Garciaparra, free-swinging mode, which is a good thing around so many walkers. 3. He is clutch. And this is both offensively and defensively. Be honest, among the top three guys you want at the plate with the game on the line, he would be there with David Ortiz ...
