Season Previews: San Diego Padres
Published 4/4/2009 by Sooze (noreply@blogger.com) at Babes Love Baseball
Now that it's Spring, it's time for one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Two years ago, they began as a serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. Moving right along with our preview of the National League West, here they are: the San Diego Padres. We miss David Wells But now there's a 1-2 punch Of Peavy and Young Trevor Hoffman's gone Gotta look to Heath Bell now To save the day/game Poor ...

... has run out of options and he needs to give the ball to an inexperienced middle reliever… Paul Sullivan. Sullivan would get the last out and the team would rush the mound. That’s what happened in 1992. In the 11th inning of game 6 Cito Gaston had to hand the ball to young Mike Timlin. He got Otis Nixon to end the World Series. And I remember watching the game on my little TV in my NYU dorm room thinking “He lived out my scenario!” DAVID WELLS It’s easy to forget that David Wells only pitched 4 seasons with the ...

And all three of these tests indicate that Moose is HOF-worthy. Lastly, B-R also has a list of comparables. This is tricky and the group seems to highlight the fact that Moose appears to be straddling the line of HOF/not-HOF. The Tools of Ignorance: Red Sox Catching Prospects
Published 10/29/2008 by Jimmy at The House That Dewey Built
... Kottaras, once considered a top prospect in the San Diego Padres system before the Red Sox acquired him in exchange for baseball’s version of Charles Barkley, repeated AAA in 2008 and displayed a mild improvement.  He’s relatively decent with the bat, flashing some power, taking walks, and hitting consistently against both righties and lefties.  However, the knock on George has always been defense related.  He has difficulty throwing out runners (even more so than Jason Varitek), but reportedly has improved in other areas. ...

... off-speed pitches with a solid understanding of the art of pitching. But as Zito showed last year, the line between a Cy Young winner and a league-average pitcher is quite thin when you don't have overpowering stuff. A career resembling that of the A's current pitching coach is more of a realistic expectation. Conroy threw harder than Zito, Young or Anderson, but we'll pick him as an example of a hyped-up A's lefty who failed to make much impact. Dana Eveland : Fairy Tale: David Wells Real World: ...

Trash or Treasure and other musings…
Published 8/30/2007 by TD at MVN RSS
... post season why didn t we go and pick one of these two up? David Boomer Wells and Estaban Loaiza. The Dodgers laid claims to both of these arms, and put them right in the middle of a pennant chase. Either one of these guys would ve been a better option to Reyes or Cormier. Not to mention two veteran arms, who can eat some innings and keep you in the ball game better than our last two options have been (there could be a case here against Wells, and I get that his last few starts in SD is the reason why he was DFA d). For all the moaning and groaning about lacking rotation depth, why didn t The Home Boy Upstairs take a shot and pull either one off the scrap heap? Yes there is an amount of risk with both, but aren t you taking just about the same chances with Cormier or Reyes at the back end of the rotation? Loaiza though I should point out is coming of injury and only made 2 starts this year. -==Scrap heap dept. == Lets just look at the ERA+ s of the 4 pitchers I ve mentioned. ...
