No on Varitek, No on Laird, Yes on Bard
Published 11/11/2008 by billfer at The Detroit Tiger Weblog
The Tigers are in the hunt for a catcher. Brandon Inge has been moved to third base and Dusty Ryan may be ready to contribute at the big league level, but I don’t think anybody is comfortable with him being handed the full load at this point. With this need has come speculation about where the Tigers may turn. Two names that have been floated out repeatedly are Jason Varitek and Gerald Laird. I’m not particularly a fan of either. So I turn my attention West to the discarded Josh Bard. Jason Varitek Despite claims made by Scott Boras that Jason Varitek is deserving of Posada money, ...

And now pinch hitting….
Published 6/20/2008 by TD at MVN RSS
Well kids, I’m headed off to the Oregon Coast again this weekend. What can I say, I didn’t get everything done last weekend that I wanted to do and I just love the coast. This time, instead of trying to post on the road I’ve been able to con my good pal Geoff Young of Ducksnorts and Baseball Digest Daily fame to come in and pinch hit for me this weekend. I shall return Sunday evening. In the meantime enjoy the poetic styling’s of  Geoff Young. No Related Post ShareThis

Padres notes: More on Headley, the draft, and surgery for Prior
Published 6/2/2008 by MB at Friar Forecast
The San Diego Padres either care very deeply about the psyche of prospect Chase Headley, or they’re a pack of close-fisted misers who care more about saving money than winning games – John Canzano, in a recent article on the Chase Headley situation (h/t: Geoff Young). Or, maybe, just maybe, it’s not quite that simple. Anyway, one thing I neglected to mention the last time I wrote about this situation is when Chase Headley is set to become a free agent. If I understand it correctly, a player gets a year of service time after ...

How long before the MLB shuts down baseball blogs?
Published 4/2/2008 by Dex at Gaslamp Ball
The Cincinatti Enquirer has a piece on the battle between the MLB and the media. What's interesting is how much the MLB and the traditional media is fighting over this kind of stuff, when so much of it is slipping to independent bloggers. It's all about credentialing, and I'm not so much concerned with gettiing ...

Ducksnorts the annual
Published 2/26/2008 by Bill Ferris at BaseBlogging
Geoff Young, the proprietor of Ducksnorts and Knucklecurve, as well as a contributor at The Hardball Times and Baseball Digest Daily, has just released his 2008 edition of the Ducksnorts annual. I know this is a huge labor of love for Geoff, as well as just a lot of labor. But this is yet another way to monetize a blog, as well as gain exposure. I interviewed Geoff when his first edition came out last year and to learn a little bit about the process, and this is a full time endeavor. Once again the book was published through Lulu, but this year an ...

Keeping KT
Published 1/22/2008 by Corey Brock at Who's your Padre?
It's not a corner outfielder, but at some point this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday, the Padres will announce a significant contract signing: That being an extension for general manager Kevin Towers, the longest-tenured general manager currently in baseball. Like other general managers who have decent tenure, you can look at Towers' record and find scores of good trades (getting Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez from Texas) and and bad trades (dealing Mark Loretta to the Red Sox for, cough, Doug Mirabelli) as well as free-agent signings that can also be classified as good or bad. Towers has been ...
