NL West Outlook: Shortstops
Published 4/3/2009 by Brendan Scolari at True Blue LA
... Edgar Renteria was signed to a two year, $18 million deal early in the offseason to be the Giants starting shortstop. Like the Casey Blake deal, this one was signed before the market for free agents plummeted and now looks fairly silly in hindsight. Nevertheless, Renteria will be an improvement on the blackhole that was Omar Vizquel last year. He is coming off a down year in Detroit (.270/.318/.372) but is only a year removed from his great .332/.390/.470 line with the Braves. Renteria seems to prefer the National League, he also struggled in his one year stint with ...

... for me to do with myself on a Friday, but I did want to go to the game, it was Shea Stadium tin night, and I had my ticket, UR1, Row V, seat 5. I was ready for a nice, crisp game, featuring a pitching matchup of Steve Trachsel and Kyle Davies. Little did I know the marathon I was in for. The game began briskly at 7:10. Trachsel began by giving up a leadoff double to Marcus Giles, a ball that sailed by Xavier Nady in right. Giles moved to 3rd on a Edgar Renteria groundout, and up stepped Larry. Giants Sign Edgar Renteria For $18.5M/2 Years
Published 12/4/2008 by Rob (noreply@blogger.com) at 6-4-2 — an Angels/Dodgers double play blog
The Giants signed shortstop Edgar Renteria on an $18.5M/2 year deal today. (Also via Ken Rosenthal.) Honestly, it's not much of a deal, but I suppose it amounts to a halfway decent upgrade from the clearly done Omar Vizquel, whose .222/.283/.267 line was a woeful reminder of how far he had fallen, and that he really shouldn't be on a major league team as a starter anymore. Renteria hit .270/.317/.382 this year with Detroit, and while that's not great, El Lefty Malo passes on a few-days-old Dave Cameron piece at Fangraphs ...

... If there was a Hall of Very Good, this guy (and his .290 average) would be one of the hallmark fathers of the place. He's a fine ballplayer, spectacularly solid. But since he was a superstar rookie for Florida that ruined the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 World Series, he's now made stops in St. Louis, Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, and now San Francisco. They guy's just not gonna settle in and play somewhere the rest of his career is he? It's only going to get worse. Something about the guy just makes him somebody your team doesn't want to keep around ...
Aren’t you glad we already have a shortstop?

... Look at the guy’s baseball reference page. Is he someone you want holding down shortstop for your team? He looks pretty average to me. He’s basically had two standout years, a couple of solid years, and then mediocrity. Yet he was the first shortstop to find a home this off-season. ...

Renteria was so-so in the field (16 errors) and at the plate this season (.699 OPS) for the Tigers. Letting him go is not a problem. It's what it cost the Tigers in the first place that is the problem. ...

... I went and checked Renteria’s stats (available on a fantasy waiver wire near you) and started to feel a little nauseas (note: I did draft Renteria as my shortstop in my fantasy league this year and am currently enjoying the JJ Hardy experience). Not only can Edgar no longer hit or run, he can’t play defense to save his life. I am fully expecting Justin Verlander to walk over and punch him in the neck after seeing another slow grounder make its way up the middle. If you're Jim Leyland, you play Brandon Inge at shortstop in a spring training game because: a) You want to have a little fun before breaking camp; b) You want to showcase a disgruntled player's versatility in order to increase his trade value; or c) You just realized that your starting shortstop missed 37 games last year and ain't getting any younger. I hope this isn't a one-time thing and that Inge can actually handle the position, because I can't think of anyone other than one-game gimmicks like Jose Oquendo who actually played catcher and ...
