Jeremy: Albert Pujols is the best player in baseball, and last year Lance Berkman was right up there with him. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joey Votto overtake Berkman this year. Votto was the second best rookie in the NL behind Soto, and is now entering a peak age 25-26 season. He was also one of three Reds to finish in the top five along with Jay Bruce, and, of course, Edinson Volquez.

So let’s take a trip back in time courtesy of Baseball Reference shall we. ...

Edinson Volquez finished 4th in NL ROY voting?

Bad enough that some of the people who cover your sport and HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF VOTING ON AWARDS don't even know the rules for what constitutes a "Rookie", but then your crack PR staff sends out the results with THOSE VOTES COUNTED right there in black and white. One would think that the fact that Volquez pitched in 22 games over the last three years would have been the first clue that he wasn't a rookie, but then again, this is Major League Baseball. ...

... Edinson Volquez had buzzed Lohse in the top of the fifth, high and tight under the chin, and it was clear Kyle didn’t like it, glaring out at Volquez. Edinson, for his part, played the role he’s supposed to in that case, stomping around like he was upset with himself for losing the pitch up there - he didn’t intend to do it. And he’d have a good argument - ...

While both are probably over their heads with ERAs in the 2.50 range, both have provided their teams with a ton of value so far in 2008 and are likely to continue doing so over the next several years. One has to think that, even as good as Josh Hamilton ...

Those two Athletic's pitchers don't project as much more than a 4th starter in the majors their sub 3.75 ERA's this year not withstanding, while the two Rangers pitchers have been seen as possible 3rd starters though this year's numbers might not reflect that as much. As Edinson Volquez has displayed this year, never underestimate a Rangers pitching prospect.
