... and Guerrerro in the corners are the antithesis of Endy Chavez and Ichiro in every way. I expect big things from Cruz, who not only had that well publicized sizzling end to the season with the bat, but also steals bases and is a solid outfielder. This might be his last chance. ...

... Endy Chavez, OF: In the hall of the Mountain King there can only be one Endy. And when Endy Chavez retires from baseball, he will enter the hall of the Mountain King and challenge the Endy that is already living there. Even with the thin air at that altitude he will still never hit home runs. ...

[image] It's been a fun off-season to be a Mets fan. First we had the KRod signing --quick, to the point, Mets get their man, fair contract, etc. Good times. Then, on December 10th, Omar came off the top rope and put together a trade that netted JJ Putz , Sean Green and Jeremy Reed . Yes we lost Aaron Heilman , Joe Smith , Mike Carp , Jason Vargas and Endy Chavez , but overall it was a brilliant move. Mets fans will love Sean Green ....trust me on this. Lately all us blogger types have been ...

The Fabulous Forum and Ken Rosenthal report that Seattle has traded for Cleveland reserve center fielder Franklin Gutierrez, sending closer J.J. Putz to the Mets in a wacky, three-team, 12-player extravaganza. The whole deal looks like this: Mariners get: Reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez, first baseman Mike Carp, and minor leaguers Maikel Cleto, Jason Vargas and Ezequiel Carrera from the Mets, and Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians. Indians get: Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder ...

... have gotten more overall value). Consider they have gotten a useful situational lefty reliever (Brewer), a power hitting fourth outfielder (Jon Nunnally), a left handed reliever who was good for a year (Andrew Sisco), a pitcher who was dealt for a useful utility infielder (Esteban German) and of course one of the best closers in the game (Joakim Soria). There have been some draft picks that didn't work out (Rich Thompson, Miguel Asencio, Endy Chavez), but overall the Royals have seemingly gotten more decent players than anyone else. ...

That's what came to mind in the instant after I learned of their respective deaths, just as it was what came up every time their names were mentioned since they stopped playing. It may not make for a complete or representative portrayal, but it is what has stuck with me. It's probably what's stuck with most Mets fans. What do you suppose we'll remember about Endy Chavez when his name comes up after he's not playing anymore? That drag bunt single to win a game against Colorado, the homer off Pettitte, a big pinch-hit ...
