2004: Sidney Ponson
The Orioles traded Ponson to the Giants during the 2003 stretch run. When he became a free agent they brought him back. This ranks among the top five f-ups in franchise history.

What I like to now refer to as "The Camden Chat Era" begins with two cruddy Roddy Lopez seasons.

... Erik Bedard , I argued this team could be very good this year because it had moved to plug up its biggest weakness from last year, the back-end of the rotation (which even by the lowly standards of fourth and fifth starters was abysmal). I made the same mistake the front office made namely noting only existing problems instead of anticipating the upcoming holes. Though the extent of the problems is impressive, that a team full of men in their early 30s declined shouldn't have been that surprising. References and Resources For research, I checked ...

... Kenny Rogers (6-5, 4.59) vs. Erik Bedard (5-4, 3.79)
After smacking around the Mariners' top free agent signee last night, the Tigers look to repeat that performance against Seattle's big trade acquisition this afternoon. I was dead wrong about the Mariners before the season; I thought they'd challenge for the AL West, a misinformed prediction that was heavily influenced by their deal for Erik Bedard.
Seattle did not give up one of their top young outfielders, one of their best set-up relievers, and three other prospects ...

Berroa was making the trade look more palatable by hitting .317 with great power in the pitching-heavy Carolina League, before being promoted to AA Wichita where he hit .296 with a .467 slugging percentage. Baseball America tabbed him as the fifteenth best prospect in baseball that winter, ahead of players like Justin Morneau, Jake Peavy, Miguel Cabrera, Carl Crawford and Erik Bedard. Spring Training Battles: Starting Pitching

I won't pretend that Sean Gallagher has a legitimate chance, although I guess I am pretending that Sean Marshall does.

Cost-certainty, risk premiums and long-term deals
Published 2/18/2008 by Tommy at Breaking Balls
This winter, there have been two big trends in the hot stove: trading big-name pitchers for packages of prospects (Danny Haren, Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, and now possibly Joe Blanton) and locking up young players to long-term deals. Today, I’ll look at the various examples of the latter contract and see what I can see.
The logic for the pitcher-for-prospects swap is relatively obvious: if a player is allowed to hit free agency, he reaps almost his entire marginal revenue product. To the degree that ...
Does Erik Bedard a playoff team make?
Published 1/28/2008 by Kevin Hayward at All on the Field sports blog
... But the carrot at the end of the stick is juicy, if not downright tantalizing. Bedard is young (he'll turn 29 in spring training), inexpensive (he'll be paid $6 million or $8 million depending on an arbitration ruling), and very, very good. He was 13-5 last year on a horrible Orioles team, with a 3.16 ERA and 221 strikeouts, a rate of 1.21K/9. ...

Last year, in his season of 21, he put together close to .400/.600 in 400+ AB's in AAA. BASEBALL: Dissecting Blanton, Bedard and Santana
Published 1/13/2008 by Baseball Crank at Baseball Crank
The Mets have lately been said to be pursuing three pitchers, all on the trade market: 29-year-old lefthander Johan Santana, 29-year-old lefthander Erik Bedard and 27-year-old righthander Joe Blanton. Santana, of course, is the best pitcher in baseball, and nearly everyone agrees that Bedard made The Leap to become a significant star in 2007 before his season was ended by a strained right oblique muscle. But how much better is Santana than Bedard, and why? And is Blanton really a quality alternative - or is he just a guy whose stock is high after a good year ...

Maybe one that is even better than the grand prize considering how much less one would have to give up and pay on an extension. I mean, Bedard is really good -- 3.16 ERA, 221Ks and 57 walks in 182 innings; he's eight days older than Santana and had a better 2007 -- but he doesn't have the hardware or extended track record to demand Santana money; ...

Our crack stuff managed to get their hands on a pre-release set of baseball cards for next year, and you'll never guess what they found... Like him or not, *I* would like to congratulate Barry Bonds on the tremendous achievement of 755 home runs, and would like to wish him the best of luck in his pursuit of 756.
