... by collapse in game 6 of the 2002 World Series, I tried to cheer them up. "Hey, the Angels are throwing a rookie with a 6.14 ERA in the World Series!" Well that rookie, John Lackey, was up for the task in game 7. He threw 5 solid innings and gave way to the Angels deep pen to win the Series. Since then Lackey has turned into a solid pitcher, finished third in the Cy Young voting in 2007. And my Giants friends haven't cheered up yet. Game 140: Angels (84-54) at Tigers (67-72)

Ervin Santana (14-5, 3.31) vs. Kenny Rogers (9-12, 5.23)
Following an impressive 9-6 victory over the Angels last night (the kind of effort that makes you wonder what really could have been, had this team gotten its act together), the Tigers have an opportunity for a series win this afternoon in what has become a new day for the city of Detroit.
Up until this season, you probably could've chalked up today's game as a win for the Tigers because Ervin Santana had some of the most brutal home-road splits you've ever ...
A Stellar Outing For Ervin And Frankie: Angels 1, Yankees 0
Published 8/2/2008 by Rob (noreply@blogger.com) at 6-4-2 — an Angels/Dodgers double play blog
Ervin Santana had a career 9.64 ERA in two starts at Yankee Stadium prior to this one. But if anything, this year has been about proving he's ditched old Nervous Ervin and has replaced him with Unnerving Ervin. The former got himself into jams, lost his cool, and gave up longballs (three home runs). This one rarely gets into jams, escapes unscathed when he does, keeps his cool, and keeps his team in the game. That Ervin Santana showed up in today's game through eight strong, scoreless innings; the Yanks only reached third once, in the fourth when Santana gave ...

Dice-K would be 3rd in ERA if he qualified (which he will, barring a major injury). For Red Sox fans, it’s almost inconceivable that this guy is on the list, as his command has been horrific at times. Still, his W/L and ERA numbers are both extremely impressive.

... continues to impress, and Ervin Santana has been nothing short of outstanding so far. The Angels' fifth and sixth starters have combined to go 8-0 with a 2.75 ERA. They're allowing barely more than a baserunner per inning, they're striking out almost two and a half hitter for every walk, and they're keeping the ball in the park (6 homers in 68.2 innings). And to think but for the injuries, one of those guys would have started in the pen. They've nicely covered for shaky starts by Weaver and Garland. And to close it out, the front end of the bullpen has been getting the job ...

Howell just rejoined the team from Triple-A Durham on Monday. In two stints with the Rays earlier this season, Howell went 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA in eight games. Ervin Santana - Santana missed his last start because the Angels activated right-hander Bartolo Colon, but in his only relief appearance on Friday, he struck out five and allowed no hits in three innings of work. In his last 15 innings pitched, Santana has allowed just three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out 14 batters. The main concern for the Angels is his control. Santana has left too many pitches up in the zone and has gotten in trouble by issuin ...
