Top 100 Angels: Garret ANDERSON #7

... WIn Shares (2nd)
So that is a Top 100 Angel and a Top 10 Angel, but despite all of his accomplishments as an Angel, his Win Shares per Plate Appearance was .026, similar to Don Baylor and a little lower than Rod Carew. But Anderson was critical in the 2002 season as well as helping to carry the team to the 2007 AL West title with a monstrous 2nd half.
And no matter what anyone tells you, he may have looked lazy in the field, but he was a damn good outfielder.

Sully: Whereas the NL East is loaded with talent around the infield, it is much thinner in the outfield. I am unsure as to who the best left fielder in the division is, but I do not think that one of Raul Ibanez, Cody Ross or Josh Willingham should be the best at their position in any division! On a side note, isn't Matt Diaz better than Garret Anderson?

... batting average, and some power, but an on-base liability. Last season, Anderson hit .293 .325 .433. This is better than anything the Braves got from their corner outfielders, but it’s hardly good, and it’s not worth an investment of anything more than a minor league contract. In a platoon role, he might improve slightly because he had no power at all against lefties, but he still only slugged .450 against righthanders.
Career high in walks: 38.

Thoughts on Garret Anderson
Published 2/23/2009 by JC at Sabernomics
The Braves signed Garret Anderson to a one-year $2.5 million deal yesterday. What do I think of this deal? Here is what I wrote to a friend via e-mail last November.
I think the Braves would be wise to pass on [Will Ohman], because they need to get a better team before they start picking up veteran relievers. I am so afraid that they’re going to sign AJ Burnett and Garret Anderson. I’ll breathe easier when/if those guys are on another club.
I have changed my mind on Anderson. I was afraid that the Braves would sign ...
Braves Get Their Bad Outfielder

... Garret's offense has been below average the last three years. He was never much at getting on base. His batting average, however, is high for such a low OBA, and he hit for some power. Again, however, that power is way down in three of the last four years, making Anderson dispensable to the Angels. ...

And his two run double completed the 6 run comeback in game 6. When his name came up in steroid rumors, a Giants friend of mine said "Man! We would have won the World Series if he wasn't on 'roids!" I reminded him that Barry Bonds was on that Giants team. STARTING LEFT FIELDER GARRET ANDERSON It was Anderson's 3 run double that ended the scoring early in game 7 of ...

... good. The problem is that his defense has gotten worse over the last 3 years, and he probably sits around -15 runs now. After accounting for the position adjustment (-7) and replacement level (21), Burrell is worth about 2.3 wins next year. That's good for about 10.4 million dollars in value, so you can estimate any multi-year deal from there. Remember though, there is a distinct possibility that his offense and defense are worse than those estimates because of his age. Garret Anderson Yeah, I know, he hasn't been attached to the Dodgers. Garret has been around for 15 seasons now and the man just keeps getting hits (2368). His option was denied, but there's still a chance the Angelics bring him back at a reduced rate. I used to work with a guy who said he didn't believe in "karma." However, he did believe "what goes around comes around." The dumbass made a lot more money than I did, too. Not sure why I'm telling you that but... A couple of weeks ago, when the Red Sox were playing the Angels in the ALDS, it was reported that Garret Anderson had pink eye (if you're one of those guys who doesn't like the DH, you probably know it better as "conjunctivitis"). It was really bad, too. Anderson even missed a few games at the end of the season and got pulled in the second inning of game 3 of the ALDS. Hey, I like Garret Anderson. But at the time I heard it I thought to myself, "how in the hell does a grown man get pink eye?" My youngest son Max had it a few months ago. My oldest son Zach had it when he was little. And I had it when I was a kid, too. It's a kid thing, I always thought. Wrong. I don't know how Garret Anderson got his but I spent ...
