... Usually, his offensive stats are quoted, and they are indeed impressive, not just for a rookie catcher, but for any catcher, period (23 HR, 86 RBI, .285 BA, .365 OBP, .504 SLG). Pretty sure we can all agree that any major league manager would be thrilled to have that kind of offensive production from the catching position. ...

2008 This Year In Baseball Awards nominees: Joba Chamberlain

... December 27th arraignment (more on that here ) is in the running for MLB.com s TYIB Rookie of the Year. 118 strikeouts in 100 innings is impressive, as is the 2.60 ERA, but an injury shortened season and jumping around between bullpen and rotation have to make Joba a long shot. I m a bit surprised he s even on the list really. The ROY pool is a little thin and he s got the stuff to contend for a Cy Young someday, but he s in a class with the likes of Evan Longoria , Geovany Soto , and Jacoby Ellsbury . This is why I don’t manage the Cardinals

... Izturis took a couple pitches to run the count 2-0, then swung and missed on a pitch it was clear he was just trying to get in the air and out of the infield. Then, as if karma chose the Cards for one night out of many when it has shunned this team, Iz2 chopped a weak hopper to second on an excuse-me swing that was just slow enough to allow Ryan, running on the play, to score around the attempted tag of Geovany Soto. ...

... NL has (seemingly at least) better (and often younger) options. So like I said I started this a week ago and since then both THE HEFTY LEFTY and TRICKY DICK HARDEN have both moved to the Senior Circuit, seemingly bolstering the NL's case. What I decided to do was to pick the top couple of candidates at each position and rank them by OPS+, which takes into account both strength of pitching and ballpark effects. Maybe Geovany Soto Should Have Just Said No

Geovany Soto has had a wonderful 2008 season, and it seems likely he will be rewarded for it with a starting berth on the National League All-Star team. In Wednesday night's game at San Francisco, he contributed a two-out, two-run hit in the seventh inning that gave the Cubs a three-run lead, which seemed to seal Ryan Dempster's first road victory of the season. (More on that in a moment.) In addition to being heralded for his offensive prowess—a 128 OPS+, 13 HR, and 48 RBI coming into Wedneday's game—Soto has been applauded for his work behind the plate and for ...

There seems to be a delicate balance upon which great teams strive for success. This team is all about that balance. When one struggles, another succeeds. They have grown accustom to success, as much as we had all grown accustom to “October-less” baseball. You can look to each position and find a player that succeeds due to the dedication and determination of those surrounding him. ...

Relax, have a beer and get ready for some good weekend baseball. Hopefully. P.S., Fukudome was 4 for 4 with two outfield assistsesses at home. His OBP has to be close to infinity (actually .455). He should be hitting second. Alfonso should be hitting fifth. At the very least, Lou should swap Reed and Theriot. Also, Geo Soto is a stud.
