AL Central Preview (Featuring Joe Posnanski)
Published 3/20/2009 by Patrick Sullivan at Baseball Analysts
... . He boasted the lowest walk rate among starters, and probably has more upside than Gil Meche. Carmona is a wild card. The only differences I see in the pitch f/x data from his great 2007 to his ghastly 2008 were in his use of the change/splitter against righties in 2007, and lack thereof in 2008. But it looks like the velocity, movement, and release point were more or less consistent both years, though fangraphs' data shows his velocity has been on a bit of a downward trend. ...

Where They Stand: Kansas City Royals

... contract. Furthemore, is he better than Ramon Ramirez(2.64 ERA, 70 K in 71. IP in 2008) who Moore traded to the Red Sox for Crisp, or Leo Nunez(2.98 ERA, 2 homers allowed in 48.1 IP) who was traded to the Marlins for Jacobs? I'm not so sure. The Cruz addition was great, but there's no guarantee the bullpen is better overall after investing a lot of money into it. As for the rotation, the Royals are looking for a lefty to take the fifth spot with right-handers Zack Greinke , Gil Meche , Kyle Davies , and Brian Bannister almost surely having the other ...

Rethinking the Jacobs trade

... Well a dreadful spring didn't keep Tomko out of the rotation last year even though he was outpitched by Kyle Davies and Luke Hochevar so I doubt Ramirez is in any danger. I just don't understand it. ---------- Last year I sponsored the baseball-reference page of Gil Meche and he responded with another good season so this year I'm passing on the Royally Speaking karma to Hochevar.

You are a fan and you have your rights and part of the fun of being a fan is booing and yelling.  Our reaction to sports is our reaction to swirling stuff going on around us.  But, next time you’re thinking about starting an I Hate Gil Meche “fan” club, think about what gives you the right to do that and what makes you think you’re the one to do it.  Maybe there’s a little narcissistic child inside, making you think you’re the person to do this.  Or maybe you’re just a strong-willed fan. ...

Projecting the Royals' 2009 Pitching With Bill James (Seriously, It's Just a Title)

... in the bullpen in 2007. It just sees innings pitched and performance (or lack thereof). Given his outstanding performance in 2008 (which, from a computer's perspective, seems to be mostly unforeseeable in the three years previous), a prediction of regression seems more reasonable. I don't think he'll regress that much. Actually, I don't know what he'll do. He's very young, so could still improve. On the other hand, he was so good last year he could regress a bit and still be a stud. Meche is also projected to regress, although a lot less than Zack in ERA and ...

Game 155: Royals (70-86) at Tigers (71-83)

Gil Meche (12-11, 4.08) vs. Zach Miner (8-4, 4.16) Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the battle to stay out of last place in the AL Central.  Has it really come to this?  Oh, yes.  Only two games separate the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals coming into this three-game series.  Let's bring on the pain.  Let's bring on the noise. After looking as if he was burning out in his previous two starts, Zach Miner pulled himself together for his last outing, once again looking like a pitcher who could be a meaningful ...

... Sunday afternoon features almost-Jay Gil(ga)Meche up against Dustin McGowan. The Meche signing was ridiculed when it happened, and I guess things worked out alright for the Jays, but other than every FA pitcher being overpriced and not worth the risk almost by definition, Meche has been not bad at all. Meche has now pitched 275 innings as a Royal, in which he has a 199/83 K/BB ratio with an era around 4. Of course, he's struggled this year, and sports an ugly 5.58 era. He's picking up though - in his last five starts he's allowed only 13 runs in 31 innings. ...

Deja Vu All Over Again

If you watched last night’s game and didn’t get some serious flashbacks, you haven’t been paying attention. First, there was Gil Meche throwing seven solid innings and getting no (well the Royals did score one run) support. Last night he struck out a season high eight batters and posted a Game Score of 65 which was his second highest point total of the season - He had a 73 after going seven shutout innings against Cleveland earlier this month. The problem was the second where the Sox picked up a pair of singles and then Meche walked Jason Varitek to ...

... He's always going to be a flyball pitcher with a tendency to give up home runs, but if he can maintain his K-BB numbers, I think he has a great chance to be a solid #2/#3 type starter with a 4.00 - 4.20 ERA. He's still a young kid (23), but he's been through a lot already. I saw an interview with him the other day, and for the first time in his career I thought he looked and sounded like a man. Not a boy, but a man. I have no idea if that means anything. No. 3: After Greinke, Gil Meche and ...

... Dripping with tools, but lacking in skills need to use them, Gibson batted .286/.327/.449 over 52 plate appearances in 1998 and 1999. For as big and strong as he was, Gibson never put up monster numbers once he got out of A-ball. Lack of plate discipline was his primary downfall, as he averaged just 32 walks per 500 plate appearances in the minors. He last played in 2005 in the Atlanta Braves system and owns a .279/.325/.465 career line over 11 minor-league seasons. Gil Meche, RHP, Seattle Mariners. ... So with that in mind (and now that they have Trey Hillman as their new manager), the Royals think they’re all set for 2008, save a starter or two. Gil Meche will continue to be an underachieving, overpriced, overpaid veteran; Brian Bannister will be a decent second tier starter who can get you 12 wins, and then, well, then things get interesting. The enigma that is Zack Greinke will start out of the third slot in the rotation and you can stop counting there. Jorge de la Rosa could have a good year, but it doesn’t mean the Royals will stop looking for other starters ( ...

Reds send Lohse to Phils for Maloney
Published 7/31/2007 by Justin at Basement Dwellers
... Trading Lohse does make sense for the Reds. As a Scott Boras client, he will probably get at least a Gil Meche-level deal, as he has a better track record than Meche ever did. And that kind of deal would not be an efficient use of money (though the Reds do have to find the starting talent somewhere, and if you can save one place, you can afford to overpay somewhere else if it improves the ballclub). Furthermore, I'm skeptical about whether Elias would rate Lohse among the top 40% of starting pitchers--especially given his bad numbers in the first half last year--which is what would be required for the Reds to get any kind of draft pick compensation if they let him walk. ...
