BR Preview: Josh Beckett / James Shields Fact: Tampa Bay is three two games away from elimination. We tried to warn Joe Maddon that "when you have your target lined up in your sights, you fucking fire. You don't stop and check if your shoelaces are tied." But Mr. 9=8 refused to listen. And now -- thanks to a clutch effort from nearly the entire Red Sox team -- his team has its back to the wall and assigned the task of facing Josh Beckett who must be burning to atone for his poor performance in Game 2. ...

Rays Ready To Rumble!
Published 10/18/2008 by joelv at Rays of Light
James Shields is ready to rumble. He was on the short end of the stick for game one, but he’s ready to roll. From TBO.Com: “I wouldn’t have minded winning the other night,” Shields said Friday when asked if he was pleased to be the man on the spot. “But I’m ready to take the ball, if that’s what you mean.” Upton and Longoria are ready to rumble. Both are tied at 6 home runs a piece. We could have easily seen Longoira with 6 blasts but ...

... going against James Shields. Vazquez has been positively awful in his last 3 starts (18 ER in 12 IP) and Guillen's been going w/ a 4 man rotation for about 10 days now. He may run those starters into the ground in his quest to bring a title back to the south side. It says something about how good Shields has become that he's the game 1 starter over Kazmir. He's less heralded than his teammate but he's been very good since the beginning of last season. And he's just 26. ...

Game 161: Rays (96-65) at Tigers (74-86)

James Shields (14-8, 3.57) vs. Zach Miner (8-5, 4.26) It's the final home game of the season for the Detroit Tigers, as both players and fans say their goodbyes and turn out the light on 2008.  Can the Tigers actually finish off their homestand with a sweep of the AL East champions?  Regardless of the outcome, today is Fan Appreciation Day at Comerica Park, and the Tigers will be shedding their jerseys after the game and passing them on to some very lucky fans.  Another lucky souvenir for a fan today could be Gary Sheffield's ...

Tampa Bay Rays Starting Pitching The Boston Red Sox are very careful about overworking young pitchers. You can see this in how they are handling Clay Buchholz. The Yankees are treating Joba Chamberlain in a similar manner. I was curious about how the Tampa Bay Rays pitching will look at the end of the season and if possibly - overwork could be a factor down the stretch. Here's what I found. James Shields is on pace to pitch 215 innings - the same as he did last season. Andy Sonnanstine is on pace to pitch 201 innings this season - also the ...

James Shields gets the ball for Tampa Bay and has emerged as that team's best starter; at 7-4, he is their only starter with a winning record and ERA below league average.   The SatanFish have lost 13 of their previous 14 games with their last victory thrown by Shields against the Royals a week ago when he went 7 2/3, allowing four runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.  The Bombers have yet to face Shields this year. ...

Shields under attack

... . Shields fits in the above category with the added feature of actually being good. Entering tonight's game, Shields owned the lowest hit rate in the American League, was second in innings pitched and WHIP, fifth in strikeouts and 11th in ERA (a stellar 2.94). He also hadn't lost a game. So you can imagine my surprise when the Sox came out swinging against Shields and making a lot of hard contact. They racked up 10 hits, three walks and two hit batters in seven innings, and could've scored more than four runs if anybody but Jim Thome were running on Joe Crede's first sacrifice fly attempt. **************** Minor league round-up: ...
