... to them (basic, high level explanation).
The guy who put it all together, smarter than I, is John Dewan, author of The Fielding Bible II.
I should qualify that I have not read the whole book, but I do have an excerpt from Sabernomics.com that presents information from Dewan putting together lists of the thirty-five catchers with most innings caught for 2006, 2007, 2008, and the sum of those three years.
Yadier Molina ranked second to Jason Kendall in Runs Saved over the past three years, with nineteen and ...
Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval

... The more I think about it, though, having two young catchers who can moonlight at different positions would be fantastic. If the best comparison for Posey is a young Jason Kendall, it’s worth wondering what Kendall’s career would have looked like if he only had to catch 100 games a year. If Posey’s bat will play at any position, an ideal situation would be to have him rest his legs frequently by playing him at another position. With Sandoval on the roster, the Giants could do that without losing any offense. They’d move Sandoval from third (or ...
Ryan Doumit Does His Imitation Of A Pretzel

... This is Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit getting hit by a pitch agains the Red sox on Monday. Notice how Doumit manages to move every part of his body except for thos which are actually in the way of the thrown ball. We may not have won many games over the last sixteen years, but I will say one thing. We’ve had a proud line of catchers that see the value in taking a 95 mph fastball to the leg in order to get on first base. Sneaky SOB’s. ...
2009 Milwaukee Milestones

... Last year Jason Kendall recorded a career high 1025 putouts behind the plate. He may not play as much this season, but he's only 370 putouts away from Gary Carter's major league record of 11785 in a career. If Kendall records putouts at his career average of 6.43 per game, he'll set the record in his 58th game. As you might expect, he's also close to the total chances record, needing only 588 more to steal that from Carter. ...

... . Kendall was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the twenty-third overall pick of the 1992 draft. In 1996, at the young age of twenty-two, Kendall was anointed the Pirates’ catcher of the future. He appeared to be just that. In his first year, Kendall played in 130 games, put up a .300/.372/.401 line , finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting (behind winner Todd Hollandsworth and Edgar Renteria), and was selected to the All-Star Game. A pest at the plate with a discerning eye, Kendall drew 35 walks in his rookie year while striking out only 30 times. Against the ...

... in today's Strib. For starters, I think Mauer deserves a bit of a pass for this year, because it seems clear now that he hasn't really been healthy. His willingness to play through pain notwithstanding, I think the quad injury has affected him at the plate. So I think he's a better hitter than he's shown this year, and while he may not win another batting title, my guess is that we can expect him to put up better numbers than he has this year. His swing, his discipline at the plate, and his eye are just too good. But the real issue, as has been noted, is that he's been built up by the organization (and our local media) to be a special talent. Well, a guy who hits above .300, gives you 5-10 home runs and 60-80 rbi's isn't really all that special. Yes, those numbers are rare for a good defensive catcher, but it's not like they're unprecedented. Jason Kendall put up similar numbers for the Pirates for his first few years. ...
