Hope Springs Eternal: Hinge Points

... is still a .250 hitter with some power. But Murphy is a big hinge point. If he duplicates last year's numbers, over a full season (say 400 at-bats since its a platoon) he will give the Mets: 27 doubles, 9 triples, 6 HR, 51 RBI, and an .313/.397/.473 split. Those numbers would be fantastic from a #2 hitter, right? And while they may be less than ideal from a corner outfielder (on a team that really gets all its power from 3 players), they certainly aren't bad. By way of comparison, Jayson Werth , who played corner outfield for the Phils for much of the year, put up ...

... His plan was to let Victorino take over center and cover for some of Rowand's lost output by getting creative in right field. He signed what seemed to be the perfect platoon. Jayson Werth had a history of pounding southpaws, just as ...

... The Phillies have a few ex-Jays on their playoff roster. Obviously Matt Stairs wouldn't have a job on the 2008 Jays, but Jayson Werth just might. After famously bringing in bullpen stopper and sunflower seed sweeper extraordinaire Jason Frasor in a trade with the Dodgers, Werth played full time this year for the first time in his career. He knocked 24 dingers, which only translated to 119 OPS+ in that little bandbox. Adam Lind's season got a little messy towards the end, though he is a 25 year old up-and-comer, not a 29 year old career platoon guy. If Werth were kicking ...

... . Weaver had never been much of a groundball pitcher and in 2004, his ratio of groundouts to fly outs was just 1.07. His career ratio is 1.08. Weaver had given up just 19 home runs in 220 innings of work, so he was able to keep the ball in the park for the most part. The Dodgers took a lead in the first inning when left fielder Jayson Werth homered off of Marquis. Weaver retired the Cardinals in the first on a pop up, line out, and strikeout, sandwiched around walks to ...

... Because he’s battled some injuries during his career, Werth’s career line of .245/.333/.420 doesn’t look outwardly gaudy.
