... 24 year old overlooked and overshadowed Matt Cain. The addition of Johnson makes the Giants front 3 one of if not the top pitching staffs in the NL. Young but erratic Jonathan Sanchez and notoriously overpaid Barry Zito will round out the rotation. If Zito can bounce back to even his 2007 level of a league average innings eater and Sanchez can put together a respectable year (Hey, Oliver Perez did it for a few years), the rotation will be one of the best in the NL. Additions Jeremy Affeldt and ...

Have the Cards really missed on any free agents?

... Jeremy Affeldt - Affeldt has had two quite successful seasons as a reliever, in 2007 and 2008, and was a name much bandied about by Cardinal loyalists coming into this off-season.  Affeldt likely flew under the radar of the Cardinals, signing early while most focus was still on the big names and taking care of the role players that needed to be resigned within the organization. ...

... odd asking for advice about a city where I used to live, but it’s been so long and the city is so big. I’d appreciate any suggestions. I’m staying near the MCI Center and looking for breakfast, lunch, and dinner recommendations. I don’t mind catching the Metro to find a good place. Preparing for the conference is one of the things that has been slowing me down. But, let me analyze a recent trade and signing. – Yesterday, the Giants signed Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year $8 million deal. Based on his performance over the past ...

... and Jeremy Affeldt are not going to help Cincinnati trim the 5.27 runs allowed per game, especially if they're in the rotation. Fogg's ERA+ has never surpassed 97. I also think Cincinnati is going to rue the day they gave Josh Hamilton away for Volquez… he's just so darn inconsistent. He's turning 25 this year and hasn't proven anything. Cueto… I don't know what to expect from him this year. He's looked good in the spring and could be ready sooner than I – or anyone, really – anticipated. ...

Reds sign Jeremy Affeldt

... Affeldt is reputed to have decent stuff, is left-handed, and should be entering his prime. However, I’m not sure what in his history makes anyone believe he’ll be a better option as a starter for this team than, say, Matt Belisle or Edinson Volquez. If nothing else, he should be better than Mike Stanton out of the bullpen. ...

Reds sign pitcher Affeldt

... to a one-year $3 million contract. I like this. Affledt has got great stuff, he just hasn't got much of a chance to show it. In 2007 he had somewhat of a breakthrough year with the Colorado Rockies, going 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA. Prior to last year, Affeldt pitched for the Kansas City Royals in a variety of pitching roles. He started 18 games in 2003 going 7-6 with a 3.93 ERA. In 2004 he collected 13 saves. Needless to say, Affeldt is a versatile pitcher and gives the Redlegs a lot of options. ...

... . He was the first man in to try to stop San Diego's nine-run fifth-inning explosion, and ended up giving up four hits and an intentional walk. One of those hits left the yard. Pulse-pounding excitement or not, Affeldt's pretty much exactly the kind of reliever the Sox should stay away from: He's left-handed. He's having a career year. He's having a career year in the National League. Before this year, he owned a 4.91 ERA and 1.52 WHIP . Those numbers are buoyed by a decent 2003. He's an ex-Royal. Linebrink's the only reliever who seems apt to live up to any contract. Beimel's another LOOGY, Vizcaino's inconsistent and the possibilities are endless with Chacon's ERA. *********************** ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick listed ...

... all pitch just one inning each which led to having to resort to Kim with the game on the line in the 11th. That said, Quirk did have the good sense or good fortune to bring Kim in when he would face three righthanders to start the inning. As mentioned in our BP2K7 player comment on Kim lefties tagged him to the tune of .325/.414/.534 in 2006 and interestingly, even though he's probably better suited to a relief role (a ROOGY?) given his splits, as he did last night he seems to have control issues out the pen and last season the Rockies brass complained that he works too fast with runners on base. Once runners got on last night Quirk had fewer options and so did not bring in his last lefty reliever in Jeremy Affeldt (with ...
