... that they have a great run in them with the current nucleus (maybe 2007 was their golden opportunity missed), Tampa is just so strong in every aspect. They have pitching, they have defense, they have offense. Their organization is deep, not just on the 25-man roster. They’re having to make trades to make roster spots, not just sending players down.

Next time you find yourself wondering "Why did I get left out of the post season rotation?" just remember this moment: Joe Blanton homered off of you. A guy who prior to that swing was 2 for 32. And your job was to stop the runs. The Phillies were up 5-1... Eric Hinske, a trusted 2007 Red Sox, homered. Thoughts of coming back danced in Tampa's head... provided you kept them off the board. 2 outs, nobody on... And you let a .063 homer off of you in the World Series. Good job.

... better team . You can say pitching and defense wins championships, and we'd probably agree with you. But it should be noted that the Phils' rotation is perhaps one of the least scary WS rotations in some time. Cole Hamels is a solid #1 for many major league teams, but after that, their rotation is held together with duct tape and spit. 45-year old Jamie Moyer has pitched well all season, but doesn't exactly instill fear into opposing batters. Joe Blanton (a 90 ERA+ in '08 )? Brett Myers (a 98 ERA+ in '08 )? These guys are starting ...

Not Your Average Joe (Blanton)
Published 7/23/2008 by Peter Bendix at Beyond the Box Score
... Upon first glance, Joe Blanton appears to be a perfectly average major league pitcher. After all, his career ERA is 4.25 – exactly the same as the league’s ERA during that time. But if we look closer, we see that the newest Philadelphia Philly isn’t actually average; rather, he’s been the beneficiary of pitching over half of his innings in a favorable environment. Namely: McAfee Coliseum. ...

... a significant real six-game deficit in wins to a Philadelphia team that has also played a bit unlucky: 53-46 compared to a 57-42 expected record.
I wonder if this is similar to the conclusion that A’s GM Billy Bean reached about his Oakland team. Though the A’s have outperformed their record by four wins, and the division-leading Angels have won 7 games more than the run differential predicts. Yet, Beane traded away both Rich Harden and Joe Blanton to the Cubs and Phillies, respectively.

In his career for the A's Blanton was 47-46 with a 4.25 ERA. Blanton signed for $3.7 million this year and next year's contract is sure to be north of $5 million. ... to go for it all. On the surface, it looks like the Phillies gave up way too much for a slightly above average pitcher, but if Brett Myers can come back and be the number 2 starter we all thought he could be and Joe Blanton assumes the number 3 role, then the rotation might actually round into something pretty good. That's a big "if", though. Blanton is under contract until 2010, so we will have plenty of time to find out if he is worth the price the Phillies paid.
