What count matters most?
Published 3/4/2009 by Travis G at Pinstripe Alley
... The largest differences concern three ball counts (because it skyrockets on-base average). In 2008, batters had just a .621 OPS (68 OPS+) after a 2-2 count. It rose significantly (to 1.075, or 194 OPS+) after a 3-1 count. That 2-1 pitch is huge. It allows the pitcher to either get even (and on 2 strikes, makes the batter protect the plate), or give the hitter a huge advantage because 3 balls is just one pitch from being walked. So in terms of equivalency, they turn from Joey Gathright into ...

Cubs Shore Up Left-Handed Bat (Sort Of), Sign Joey Gathright
Published 12/16/2008 by Ryan Corazza at MOUTHPIECE Blog // A Chicago-Addled Sports Blog
... So, we’ve established Joey Gathright has hops. He’s also quite fast, as he’s converted on 74 percent of his steal attempts throughout his career. (These traits sometimes go hand and hand in an athlete’s body, or so I’ve heard.) But, um, can he hit and field and do all that other stuff baseball players need to do too? Well, sort of. But anyways, the Cubs are sure hoping so, as they signed him to a one-year, $800,000 deal today. Kansas City non-tendered him Friday, and the Cubs swooped in today. ...

Crisp not part of the solution

... it seems like I bash every move DM makes but that's not whats going on here. I stayed silent a few days and really thought about this trade and here's what I decided - it's a lateral move and Crisp is neither an upgrade or a downgrade. As a complementary player on a good team he won't hurt you but on a team looking for offense a playmaker and sparkplug he is not. He does offer suberb defense and is a stolen base threat (though his SB % is less than ideal) so this probably means Joey Gathright's days are numbered. Gathright had two things going for him, speed & ...

Love me non-tender

... is 80% of his 2008 salary, by rule the least the Royals could offer Bale.  He certainly hasn’t earned it.  Bale has good stuff and decent control for a reliever and his peripherals have been much better this year than his ERA, but I still wouldn’t offer him $1.76M.  I’d non-tender him and consider attempting to sign him for considerably less (as long as his contract has an team out-clause if he gets any self-induced injuries).   Joey Gathright 2007 stats 228 ab, 0 hr, 19 rbi, 9 sb, 8 ...

Winter is the time for caravans... and road trips for a displaced fan
Published 1/22/2008 by Deaner at Blue Collar Baseball
I caught the Royals winter caravan as it came through town yesterday and had a great time. I met former Royals pitcher Dennis Leonard and current Royals Billy Butler, David DeJesus, and Joey Gathright, along with broadcast personalities Fred White and Steve Sullivan (formerly of the Reds). I got my picture taken with Sluggerrr and I also got to speak with GM Dayton Moore for about 3 minutes. Everyone was very friendly and willing to give autographs and chat it up with fans. Dayton Moore talked to me for a bit ...
