That's Why They Play The Games: 2009 NL West

... The Giants are putting together one of my favorite rotations in the league. Defending Cy Young winner Timmy! and face of the franchise Matt Cain create a formidable 1-2. Noah Lowry, when healthy is a solid pitcher, though he's not healthy at the moment. But the guy I'm really interested in is Jonathan Sanchez. He struck out 157 guys in 158 innings last year in his first full season. I think he'll be even better this year. ...
Where They Stand: San Francisco Giants

... and/or Jonathan Sanchez for a nice bat in return. Cain's a tremendously talented right-hander with a fastball that can reach the upper 90s. The last two seasons he had ERA's of 3.65 and 3.76, but his records in those seasons were 7-16 and 8-14. This speaks volumes of the offensive problems the Giants have. I'd think it would take an overwhelming offer for Sabean to consider dealing this guy. As for Sanchez, the lefty displayed some nasty stuff in 2008, but absolutely fell apart in the second half. In the first half, he went 8-5 with a 3.97 ERA, 115 strikeouts in 111 innings, ...

... Kenny Rogers (4-4, 4.63) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (6-3, 4.26)
Shouldn't the baseball gods be angry at the San Francisco Giants for preventing the Detroit Tigers from winning a game in which Marcus Thames ("The Hammer!") hit a home run? Before last night, Detroit had won every time Thames put one into the seats. Could the baseball gods have been wagging a finger at Thames for showing hubris in hitting more than one home run? Perhaps, but he had another two-homer game earlier this season vs. the Angels, and the Tigers won that ...

I was so busy whining about sloppy baserunning and the 12-man pitching staff this morning that I forgot to mention Adrian Gonzalez’s spectacular 3-5 double play in Tuesday’s contest. It was a thing of beauty.
You know what else is a thing of beauty? A win. How ’bout we get one of those ...

Yanks, Giants talked Matsui

... , but I’d be floored if the Yanks could get one of those two for Godzilla. Maybe they could land Jon Sanchez and some salary relief instead? The main obstacle would be getting around Godzilla’s no-trade clause, but I do think he’d waive it to reunite with Torre in Chavez Revine. Pac Bell…not so much. ...
giant implications

... , and the idea has some merit. since duncan makes so much sense for the giants, the cards could offer him plus, say, brendan ryan or brad thompson or anthony reyes and request lowry plus sanchez or correia in return. (ryan also makes a lot sense for the giants --- omar vizquel's contract is up, and san francisco does not have an in-house replacement ready. another logical fit for that organization would be mark hamilton.) sanchez is the cards' type of pitcher --- ie, he throws a hard sinker --- and he has ...
