Two Great Pitchers, Two Great Outings, Two Silly Errors
Published 4/12/2009 by Saul Sparber at Hot Foot
... To the demise of Johan’s stellar performance, two inexplicable fielding errors led the Mets to their loss. A routine fly ball hit by Marlin’s RF Cody Ross to Daniel Murphy fell right out of his glove, as Keith Hernandez slyly refered to Murphy’s “allstar catch” as not using two hands to catch the ball. The dropped ball allowed Florida LF Jeremy Hermida to score, eventually leading C ...

Kostya Kennedy: Mex Belongs In Hall

... The Veterans Committee was established so that you can still vote in deserving players that have failed to meet the criteria on the regular ballot. We need to start realizing that there is more to a player then just the numbers you read on Baseball Reference. There is an intrinsic value to a member of the Hall. Numbers are the biggest part, but shouldn’t be the sole indicator of whether a player changed the game. Anyone who saw Hernandez play knows the impact he had on the first base position. They understand what he meant to the New York Mets. I dare say we have yet to ...

While it's true that Belle's career was terribly short by Hall of Fame standards, it's also true that there's not a great deal separating Belle from Jim Rice, who's going to be inducted next summer. Mets: Keith Hernandez I'm not sure if anyone but Brian Kenny is out there making the case for ...

... estimate the missing pieces. Overall, the SFR system is analagous to the work that Sean Smith has been doing on TotalZone and our results are fairly similar. For example in SFR Brooks Robinson (shown right) comes out at +293 runs during his career (easily the career leader) while TotalZone has him at +269. Likewise Mark Belanger SFR is +198 while TotalZone is +232 runs. There are certainly places where it differs, however, as SFR doesn't rate Frank White or Keith Hernandez nearly as highly as TotalZone seems to. In the column I also show detailed ...

The year before, Hernandez had put up a nifty line of .233/.324/.326 in 1989 with the Mets while playing in 75 games and losing his starting spot at first base to Dave Magadan(!)
