This Is Getting Ridiculous

Kerry Wood was in Cleveland on Wednesday night to take the physical needed before he can finalize a two-year deal with the Indians worth about $20 million.
$10 million a year for Kerry Wood?! And I thought the K-Rod contract was excessive. Kerry Wood was a more valuable pitcher ($5.72 million) than Francisco Rodriguez ($4.62 million) in 2008, but he was limited by injuries during the four previous seasons. Assuming that Wood pitches exactly as he pitched in 2008, I estimate he will be worth approximately $6.5 million per ...

... years he was hoping for), but AC has a similar story on the official site so this one could certainly have some legs to it. If you were hoping for that strikeout-heavy closer with dominant stuff after being treated to the soft-tossing “guts” of Brodzoski (The Close) or Sticky Wickman, certainly Kerry Wood is the answer to your prayers. When healthy (and that is certainly a caveat, but more on that in a bit), pitchers don’t get much more dominant than Wood. Consider his 2008: 34 saves, 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 84 K, 18 BB over 66 1/3 IP over 65 games ...

... Chicago Cubs- Kerry Wood, 1998. Has struck out 20 batters in one game, has nearly 200 more k's than innings pitched, has clubbed 7 homeruns as a pitcher, and now is a fire-ballin' closer (34 saves in '08). If not for being injured for parts of 2004-2007, we'd be starting the future Hall-of-Famer talk, but Wood will just have to settle for being a beloved Cubbie. The Cubs have announced they're moving on without Wood, but it's difficult for me to picture him wearing any other uniform. ...

... With that performance Wood kicked off what would end up being one of the most dominate seasons ever by a rookie pitcher. He ended it 13-6 with a 3.40 ERA, his 12.58 K/9 was good enough to lead the league and earn him rookie of the year honors. Shortly thereafter injuries got to him; he missed all of the 1999 season and part of 2000 due to Tommy John surgery. He came back in 2001 and posted solid numbers the next three seasons. Since then he has had a love affair with the disabled list, missing most of the last four seasons. Wood is back and will try his luck out of the bullpen in his latest return from the disabled list. Here’s too hoping that Dusty Baker gets nowhere near him. ...
