Maddux In Mirror Is Closer Than He Appears: Dodgers 5, Padres 2
Published 9/2/2008 by Rob (noreply@blogger.com) at 6-4-2 — an Angels/Dodgers double play blog
Doing this by long-distance and Gameday Audio-only (and at that, only the first and ninth innings, with only my Verizon phone to keep score inbetween times), it was nonetheless heartwarming to see Greg Maddux eke out his 354th win, tying Roger Clemens on the all-time list. One more, and he stalks Kid Nichols with 361, but suchlike now seems the stuff of fantasies. Surely, it will come with another team, or not at all; the Dodgers are done with him, as is Major League Baseball, but we have seen, perhaps, the last 300 game winner to grace the game for a very long time. ...

BASEBALL: Kid Nichols in Action

... from 1901 of Hall of Famer Kid Nichols demonstrating for a photographer his pitching grip & motion (granted, the motion's a bit artificial since it has to be stopped for still photos in a studio). Nichols, largely forgotton today, was easily one of the 10 best pitchers in the game's history - he won 63% of his career decisions with a 2.95 ERA pitching mainly in the offense-crazy 1890s, his career ERA+ of 140 means he was 40% better than the league for his career (among pitchers with over 3,000 career IP, only Lefty Grove, Walter Johnson and Roger Clemens can top that, and ...

... Matt Chico gets a one, two, three fourth for his first scoreless frame of the night. Felipe Lopez hits a one-out double, one hop and over the walll just left of center. ("He hit Kid Nichols," another player on the outfield wall, Scout interjects.) Rob Mackowiac pinch hits for the pitcher, and hits a ground ball off Martin Prado's glove, Felipe Lopez tries to take home, and Yunel Escobar picks up the carom and throws home in time to nail Lopez at the plate. Cristian Guzman singles on a 1-1 pitch from Hudson for Guzman's third hit of the night. Lastings Milledge takes ...

BEST SEASON/300th WIN

... - A 17th straight year with 15+ wins and a 14th Gold Glove Award. Like Clemens, Maddux had a solid year but the Cubs finished 16 games back of the Cardinals. 13. Kid Nichols - The Kid pitched well in 1900. He even led the league in shutouts. The Beaneaters had some good arms that year but they just didn't hit and the Kid wound up with a below .500 record. Hard luck pitchers never get any love when it come to the Cy Young award. I tried to be as generous as I could. 14. ...

... . He'll likely pass Keefe this season, but that is probably the last guy he'll pass. Clemens is next, but he's still going. Kid Nichols is two seasons away, and I don't think Maddux has two more seasons in him. Ability wise, sure -- he's basically a league-average starter now and could probably crank out average seasons for a little while longer -- but one wonders how long Maddux will feel like being average. ...
