... How will an economic turndown of biblical proportions NOT affect major league baseball. The 'staycation' mentality boosts companies like Netflix, where you can get a year of entertainment at less expense than a monster seat ticket to watch Kansas City. And you have to wonder why the Royals paid Kyle Farnsworth a king's ransom, to be Kyle Farnsworth...a sub .500 reliever who defines mediocrity statistically. Maybe he's a great guy, or an investment genius. ...

Minnesota Twins Off-Season Checklist
Published 10/15/2008 by Jesse at Twinkie Town
... primary area of concern for Minnesota's front office over the next couple months will be how to construct a bullpen for 2009. There will be a desire for a strong right-hander who can take on some leverage innings, and a decision will need to be made on which southpaws will make the 25-man roster. Jesse Crain and Pat Neshek will back up Joe Nathan, but if the Twins wanted to make a one or two-year splash on a righty like Kyle Farnsworth or ...

... Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye occupy the outfield spots, Thome DH, and Nick Swisher CF. Some configuration could, I suppose, end up with Swisher at first and the scuffling Paul Konerko on the bench, but if Griffey plays CF that will be trouble. It's hard to see how this move really helps them too much going forward. At the very least their bench will be better, and they didn't give up too much. To New York: Ivan Rodriguez To Detroit: Kyle Farnsworth The Verdict: Hard to know what to make of this one. I suppose the ...
BASEBALL: Sell High
Published 7/31/2008 by Baseball Crank at Baseball Crank
... The interesting thing about the Pudge Rodriguez for Kyle Farnsworth deal is that both teams are trying to sell high. Farnsworth, coming off consecutive poor seasons in 2006-2007, has been pitching well in 2008, albeit not so well that anybody really trusts him, especially allowing 2.23 HR/9 IP, which is a recipe for catastrophe. Before getting rocked in his last outing, he had a 2.11 ERA in 23 outings since May 27, with only 3 HR allowed in that period. The Yankees figured they could unload him before he blew up again to a Tiger team whose bullpen has been a wreck. ...

Inge Ks WAY too much and hits terrible for average. 3) Inge should be at third base full-time anyway, with Carlos Guillen at first base and Miguel Cabrera at DH. 4) You just got Kyle Freakin' Farnsworth. I don't care how hard the guy throws or how much bullpen help you need, Farnsworth is not the answer. ... Pending free agency has a tendency to spur on some players. Kyle Farnsworth is a case in point. Here's Kyle's lifetime production: ERA 4.4, WHIP 1.39. The last time Farns. was playing for a contract he produced: ERA 2.2, WHIP 1.0 (#s rounded). Farnsworth has improved this season, his ERA is 3.6, WHIP 1.38 compared to last season's disastrous 4.8, WHIP 1.45. Some will suggest Kyle is no longer a victim of Joe Torre's mangling. The facts show that Kyle is actually capable of doing the job when he's playing for a contract. ...

... about what LaTroy might bring to the table. A nearly 5.00 ERA would be bad news for the Yanks, especially if they're counting on LaTroy to pitch in big spots late in games. This is one of those circumstances where all we're left with is the unsatisfying phrase of "Time will tell." The only thing we know for sure is that Hawkins is only signed for 2008. Whatever happens, we likely won't be subjected to watching him for multiple seasons (unlike the torture we've endured with a certain other reliever ).

In the meantime, I’m curious about what you would want to know about the new place. We’re going to get a chance to interview chief operating officer Lonn Trost, one of the execs in charge of the new stadium. What questions would you like answered?
Drop me an e-mail with any suggestions you have.
It’ll be interesting to see if they have Mark Teixeira’s locker picked out yet.
