Lastings Will Succeed as a Leadoff Hitter
Published 3/24/2009 by jeff@nationalspride.com (Jeff Bergin) at NationalsPride ::: Stat Boy
... I do not have much to go on, given his 1.5 years of MLB service, but I think Lastings Milledge will find more success at this point in his career as a leadoff hitter than he would anywhere else in the order, and as a result, the Nationals will be more successful. While I usually rely on statistics to make my point, it is very hard to do that in this situation. Milledge is 23 years old (24 in two weeks) and has amassed 873 at bats at 3 very different stops in the major leagues since 2006. His 500+ at bats last year came as the entire team was depleted and he was asked just ...

... "J-Lo" Tavarez and one or two anonymous lefties into a servicable 6 0r 7-man bullpen. I mean, we're talking relief pitchers here, not the staff of the Manhattan Project. Speaking of rocket scientists, Tavarez's comments were undoubtedly offensive to club-goers, BBW, Jennifer Lopez, alcoholics and a wide range of other interest groups, but as I can't disagree with him on the merits, I have nothing else to add. Honorary 25-man roster spots go to: Blastings Thrilledge and Zimmermann (again). ...

... Lastings Milledge, CF: Lastings Milledge is only 24? And he wasn't entirely crappy last year so maybe we should lay off him a little bit. Eh, it's ok. He plays for the Nationals so no one will see him anyway. Favorite Brady Bunch kid: Onion. When told there was no "Onion Brady" he stabbed me. ...

... their rotation threw even close to as many innings as Olsen did.
Weaknesses: Everything. Their starting pitching looks dreadful, their bullpen just as bad and their offense looks worse than their pitching.
Opportunities: There is a little talent in this lineup. If Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman could stay healthy, if Elijah Dukes could stay sane, if Lastings Milledge could take a developmental step forward, if ...

CRAP: Outfielders

... bit biased here. A few factors for why I think he's doing to break out: 1) He's 28. 2) He's due for a better season, now that he re-tinkered his swing. 3) He's out of RFK. Those numbers are within range of what he did in '06 and it's only a modest power bump over his career numbers. The other systems don't see the adjustments he made, and they don't see how hard he works at his game. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt -- yet without going wacky and expecting 40 homers and 120 RBI. ... skills to CF? It’s a question that needs to be answered because I don’t want to go through another 3 years of complaining that the Nats aren’t giving Milledge a chance to show what he can do…
Of course there is another possibility, could Milledge be the piece is a bigger trade? Or could Austin? or Wily Mo? (Or could the Mets have made this deal to move Church to someone else….)
