... Marcus Giles, of the Brothers Giles, was signed to a minor league contract. Marcus has experienced some success in the past with the Braves, but had an abysmal 2007 with the Padres and didn't even play last season after being released by the Rockies. The 30 year old may still have something left in the tank, and if he can get anywhere near his career line of .277/.353/.429 then I'd gladly welcome him aboard as an insurance policy at 2nd base for the rehabbing Utley. However, it's likely Marcus's well ran dry when drug testing became legit. ...

... The Dodgers thought they had a deal with Marcus Giles, only to have the journeyman second baseman reject the idea of starting a comeback at Triple-A. Like Vargas, Giles may have passed on a good situation. With the Dodgers running through third baseman the way that Joan Rivers runs through plastic surgeries, Giles would have been in line for a quick promotion. He has the skills to play third base, and could have received some playing time at second base behind the aging Jeff Kent. Giles apparently feels that Triple-A baseball is beneath him, but let's not ...

... James Online . And it is a lot of fun to look through these tables yourself. For instance, I found that the Padres scored .74 runs per inning when Marcus Giles led off last year, but only .34 when he batted second and .31 when he batted third. I'm not sure what it says about Giles or Pierre (probably nothing), but isn't that weird? By the way, did you know that a player named Giles led off in 147 of the Padres' games last year? That's 78 by Brian and 71 by Marcus . That's courtesy of Baseball Reference . Anyway, James has stated that he wrote ...

That total is dwarfed by JD Drew’s career mark of $52,091,688, nevermind factoring in contributions from brothers Stephen ($1,500,000) and Tim ($202,000). Half-brothers Orlando and Livan Hernandez have combined for 9 World Series appearances, 5 World Titles, and $72,725,000 in career earnings, and counting. ... , a second baseman, reminded me a bit of Braves prospect Marcus Giles, a fellow San Diegan who doesn’t quite look like he belongs out there. At 6′0″, 200 lbs., Wigginton looks more like a fireplug than a middle infielder. He looked a bit slow in the field, particularly to his right, and I have doubts that he’ll remain at second base. If he has the arm, a move to third base wouldn’t be out of the question. He’s got the bat for it. Wigginton is extremely aggressive at the plate. On more than one occasion, he took a vicious cut at (and missed) ...

... Marcus Giles - He was by far the best second baseman of the streak. Mark Lemke's not on this list, though he would have probably made the top 35. Whereas Lemmer was all defense and no hit, Giles was solid on defense and a solid hitter as well. Forget for a moment the declining stats for each of the last three years, until this year he was above the league average for second baseman in most all offensive categories. Giles also gets a lot of points for having such a bubbly personality. He was one of those guys who seemed to bounce right back up after getting knocked down (and he got knocked down a lot); and an attitude like that on a baseball team is often greatly undervalued. A team is going to lose a lot of games over the course of the season, and what attitude a player takes with him to the field after those losses will affect those around him and can play a big part in a team bouncing back with a win. Was there less of ...
