... .288/.894). Baldelli might no longer be the potential 20/20/20 (2B/HR/SB) player he was drafted as, but maybe he is. If the Pirates bring him in, it would allow them some extra time if they need to give it to McCutchen, though it could also speak to the team's continued lack of faith in Steve Pearce's ability to contribute regularly. That said, if both Baldelli and McCutchen produce, then it gives the Pirates a very valuable trade chip when the deadline rolls around. Mark Prior This one needs little explanation. Step Away From The Young Pitcher

... Dusty Baker is not worried about Edinson Volquez’s fatigue. Well, I’m satisfied. It’s not like he has a history of breaking down young pitchers, right? Some words from the esteemed Mr. Baker: “It isn’t called the dog days of August because it’s April. Sometimes you’ve got to go into uncharted waters to learn. As long as you aren’t hurt, you have to pull through it. Sometimes you have to give the dudes on the other side some credit. You have to make an adjustment. He’ll make ...

Hendry rolls dice on Harden
Published 7/9/2008 at waxpaperbeercup
In another move that indicates Next Year is now (for the Cubs brass anyways), Jim Hendry traded for Oakland A's RHP Rich Harden. While Hendry paid a pretty good price including young Sean Gallagher in the deal the upside on this deal for the Cubs is huge, so is the downside. Harden has a long history of injuries. (So much so that Phil Rogers actually compared him to another often injured RHP). The risk of injury with the 26 year old Harden is huge. He has already been on the DL this year with a sore shoulder. He didn't pitch 50 innings in either ...

... better. The low was 88. In the World Series, the A's battered them. The Cubs led for about five innings while getting outscored 35-15. It wasn't so much the Cubs underachieving as it was that good an A's squad. They won three titles and four pennants in five years. That's the best stretch Connie Mack ever had. The 2004 Cubs are the best squad the team has put together since the days of Johnny Evers . That's not terribly surprising. Sure, Kerry Wood and Mark Prior combined for only 43 starts, but Carlos Zambrano had what's still the best ...

... 42, does that better than anybody, allowing slightly more than one walk per nine innings. Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy led the NL in ERA, wins, and strikeouts, becoming only the eighth pitcher since WWII to win the Triple Crown of pitching. The big question marks are the back of the rotation and the front of the bullpen where health and age loom large. Russ: One of the major questions facing the Padres is what they'll get out of Mark Prior and Randy Wolf. It's a big if, but if Prior ...

Padres Snag Prior
Published 12/26/2007 by JC at Sabernomics
... I have been wondering where Mark Prior was going to land and for how much. Last week, during a radio interview, I was asked what I thought Prior would be worth. His story is intriguing. Unfortunately, I don’t have my numbers in front of me, so this is all from memory. In 2002 and 2004-2006, Prior was a $5-6 million pitcher—good, but nothing to get excited about. It’s 2003, when he was an $18 million pitcher, that has us drooling. In 2007, he didn’t pitch at all. This is quite a range in performance. ...

A Prior Commitment

... that the Nats are interested in signing always-injured Mark Prior . (From afar, I thought he was injured more than he was -- save for last year, he's started 20 or more games a season all but his rookie year) Prior's a mess (and probably not ready at the start of the season), but he's exactly the type of player that the Nats should take a chance on. There's still a world of potential in that arm, and if he ever were able to stay healthy, you'd have a great starter come relatively cheaply. It's a no-risk move in that it wouldn't cost the Nats a thing, other than cash. And with ...
