Bernie: I Had It Easier Than Melky and Brett
Published 3/28/2009 by Greg Cohen (slidingintohomeblog@gmail.com) at Sliding Into Home: A Yankees Blog
... As far as having it easier than Cabrera and Gardner, I'm not sure I agree with Bernie. I think he showed more than enough skills in his first few seasons that even these Yankees would keep him around. If they were satisfied with Melky Cabrera's first two full seasons in the big leagues I think they would have been satisfied with ...

... , but after last year's underwhelming performance he's far from a lock for an everyday job. He has more major league experience and a better arm than Gardner, but the Cash Man and Girardi have taken a shine to the "gritty" Gardner and made it clear that he is being considered for the job. They will both be given plenty of opportunities to prove themselves worthy before opening day, but it's Melky who really has something to prove. He set himself up for great expectations after fitting in so well in 2006, but has really let his performance slide since then. If he doesn't impress ...
So..who ya got in Center? Gardy or Melky?
Published 1/24/2009 by zellyanks91 at Zell's Pinstripe Blog
... If I were to choose right now..I would go with Gardner, but things can change. Gardner has great speed, a good glove, and draws a lot of walks. If he can keep his average up and get on base, then he can be a real threat. Melky Cabrera showed last year that he only had a glove. His offensive numbers were horrendous. Gardner’s ...
Analyzing the Yankee Bench

... Although Cabrera is technically a switch-hitter, his numbers suggest that he is much better from one side than the other. When you consider that Gardner has better speed and is patient enough to be a lead off hitter (although his power is sorely lacking), Gardner would seem like the better starting option. ...
Yankees to get older. Is that wiser?

... keeps coming up as a fit for the Dodgers. We don't really have a 2nd baseman and while playing for Torre he had great seasons in 2006/2007 at the tender age of 23/24. I've stated here before what a great 2nd half hitter he is with a 150 point difference in OPS between the 1st and 2nd half. I find the idea that we are interested in Melky farfetched but he did perform for Torre in 2007 at the age of 22. Both of them were terrible in 2008 but Torre probably only remembers what they did when they played for him. The contract of ...

... Are you confident with the centerfield situation? We have three in-house options: Melky, Gardner and Damon. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Stat of the Day: Melky
Published 3/4/2008 by Dave & Aziz Nekoukar at New York Yankees Fan Blog
With so much attention on whether Melky can develop into a true everyday player, we wondered if a statistical investigation could help educate us. The answer, unfortunately, is a big not really. The catch is, Melky's never been known to hit for power, so he's not about to do that in the majors. Don't expect anything to develop, either. In fact, staring at his numbers, his two full seasons in the bigs are startlingly consistent: he had the same exact slugging percentage last year (.391) as he had in '06 . Also, in 1,024 major league at-bats, Melky has 15 homers. That's 68.26 at ...

... . The numbers are impressive but don't tell the whole story. There is something to be said for attitude and playing with exuberance. Robbie's positive energy rubs off on teammates, especially Melky Cabrerra. The stability that comes with a long-term deal should benefit everyone involved. Cano is a building block of the youth-movement and he isn't going anywhere--it's all good.
