... Garrett Mock and Jesus Colome was uncharacteristically solid. The offense came in bunches, as Nick Johnson recovered from his brush with the DL to lauch his second homer of the spring. Another day, another two hit game for Ryan Zimmerman. Ronnie Belliard was 2-3 (with a SB!) and the Attorney General continued to impress off the bench. Honorary 25-man roster spots go to: Nick the Stick and Everyday Colome.

... , Nationals' Team President Stan Kasten is quoted as saying, "...I would expect heavy trade talk between now and opening day," and somehow Johnson, coming off wrist surgery and a broken leg, is the most desireable National to be had. Should the Nationals trade Nick Johnson and his career .396 OBP, .456 SLG, and his baseball-reference.com 162-Game Avg. of 36 doubles, 21 HR's and 81 RBI's per?(Though, realistically, you should probably adjust for 140 games played.) ... Nick when healthy" can match Dunn with the bat. He doesn't have Dunn's home run power but he actually gets on base at a much higher clip and can slug over .500 to boot. Unlike Dunn, Nick has a good glove to go with it (+6 from 2005-2007). He has posted an OPS+ of 138, 93, 137, 149, 123 over the last five years that he's seen action(missed all of 2007) and is at the end of a contract that will pay him 5.5 million in 2009. In his last healthy season in 2006 he had a triple stat line of 290/428/520. His lifetime OBP is just a notch below .400 at ...

... . To put it in perspective, that is as many seasons with 400+ at bats as fragile Nick Johnson in roughly the same amount of service in the majors. In short, best of luck Chicago, good luck trading him at the deadline to the Braves or Marlins for a bunch of prospects. This signing is pivotal for the Nationals as it removes another coveted free agent from the impact player pool, leaving Manny Ramirez and Adam Dunn as the only remaining viable power options for the Nationals. Dunn and Ramirez will be linked this offseason as both are being discussed for spots on about 4 teams ...
SWOT Analysis - NL East

... the Nats have tacked on two players who would have been among their very best in 2008. Nobody on their roster produced like Willingham last year and nobody in their rotation threw even close to as many innings as Olsen did.
Weaknesses: Everything. Their starting pitching looks dreadful, their bullpen just as bad and their offense looks worse than their pitching.
Opportunities: There is a little talent in this lineup. If Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman could stay healthy, if ...

... Nick "The Stick" Johnson looks terrific, showing few ill effects from the broken leg that kept him out all of last season. With a slimmed down physique, Johnson stretched a single into a double as he successfully challenged Jeff Francoeur's throwing arm. In contrast, Johnson's backup, Dmitri Young, came to camp weighing in excess of 33 pounds. If Johnson continues to play well, Young won't see much more than an occasional start at first base against left-handed pitching. That won't help Young's trade value. Perhaps the solution will involve trading Johnson, whose trade value is ...

... 500 If you move Zimmerman to a neutral park, his career slugging jumps up to right around .485, so .500 is in line with a natural career progression. I think he'll take a jump in his walk rate, since he won't feel pressured to carry the team on his shoulders. It dropped down slightly last season, and even if he goes back to 2006's levels, it'll be a pretty decent bump in OBP. So far, his wrist seems like it's ok. If it is, him surpassing that projection wouldn't be surprising either. Nick Johnson HR RBI AVE OBP SLG BJ ---------------------- CHONE ---------------------- Marcel ...
