Five questions: Cincinnati Reds
Published 3/27/2009 by Justin Inaz at The Hardball Times
... Tom Tango's linear weights. I ran a check with base runs on overall team hitting statistics and didn't find much of a difference between base runs and what the linear weights project, meaning that there aren't extreme enough OBP vs. ISO issues to cause linear weights to be a poor predictor of team-level offense. Pitcher run allowed estimates are straight from CHONE, pro-rated by innings. Justin Inaz is a lifelong but still optimistic Reds fan. He writes about baseball and the Reds at his blog whenever he can find the time. Do you have a general question or comment for one of ...

JustVORP versus Just VORP: The (Sort of) Big Rundown
Published 2/17/2009 by devil_fingers at Driveline Mechanics
... I'm not writing to continue that tired non-debate or to make fun of those crochety ol' "mainstream media" types. Rather, I'm going to review some legitimate criticisms of VORP for position players (there are other issues for pitchers) and to see what sort of practical weight the problems of VORP might have, that is, does it matter beyond just a "few runs" that internet sabermetricians are carping about? In an earlier column, I discussed and utlized Justin Inaz's Total Value spreadsheet for 2008, a very carefully ...

... is park adjusted. It is not league adjusted. This is a very useful statistic for figuring out a player's total contribution as a baserunner. Besides the stolen base factor, it also helps determine things like which players take the extra base. Wins Above Replacement I wanted to add this statistic because no site had a satisfactory metric that effectively measured all-around value. The calculations are mainly inspired by the work of Justin Inaz. 10 runs are worth approximately 1 win. Field Players ...

Sabathia issues of how to handle guys who ...

As of today, we're winning The Big Trade: Why the Reds are better off with Volquez than with Hamilton
Published 6/26/2008 by Rick House at Red Reporter
... But I wanted to use more substantial (and comparable) statistics. I decided on TV (total value) for the position players and RAR (runs above replacement) for pitchers, as calculated by Justin Inaz (JinAZ of On Baseball and the Reds). Justin also helped me out with some commentary. TV takes into account fielding and hitting and is park-adjusted. RAR is also park-adjusted. I chose not use FIPRAR, which factors in defense behind a pitcher and luck. I figure we're already discounting luck with the first assumption, and the Reds' defense is only hurting Volquez. ...

... on the bases, plus my favorite defensive play happened. Molina picked a guy off second. It's rare that it happens, extremely rare, but when a catcher can pull that off it's just huge for a team. Erasing a guy from scoring position on a play like that, especially to end an inning, is a huge momentum builder. Moose should buy Molina a beer tonight. And, of course, we got to see another throw from Jason Giambi to Johnny Damon. Those are always humorous. Make sure you check out On Baseball and The Reds for your Reds fix.
