Hockey Night in Blogdom: What We Want in 2009
Published 7 days ago by By The New York Times at Slap Shot
... This may be a pipe dream, but I wish for the mainstream media to recognize the N.H.L. for the beautiful moments we all enjoy. An Alex Ovechkin goal, a Sidney Crosby pass, a Henrik Lundqvist save, that’s what we live for, so much more than the uncontrolled mouth of an idiot or a random act of stick-assisted violence. * * * Dirk Hoag of On the Forecheck I’d like to see the N.H.L. owners take a serious look at gate-revenue sharing. It would not only get them acting more like one league than 30 separate teams, but could also address disparate issues like small-market support and ...

You can add 100 more playoff games to that (I never like how these milestones pretend playoff games don't exist). On the Forecheck has more on just how steady and valuable Arnott has been, despite being somewhat under the radar ignored by national media because he's been in Nashville during the last quarter ...

Underachieving? To a Point.

So I was reading Dominik at Lighthouse Hockey the other day and he found something cool at the Forechecker.  Dirk Hoag (a.k.a. The Forechecker) put together a PythagenPuck Analysis, which is essentially a means of looking at team's goals for and goals against rate to see how good they really are.  Over a whole season, this makes sense, good teams will generally have positive goal differentials and the bad teams will generally not.  Of course, all things are relative, see the figures for the Devils in recent seasons, as an ...

... best in the league (two close games against the Sharks) but have also shown they can really mail it in (the last game against the Kings).  If Q can get some consistency out of the team they could be very dangerous.  And if the front office can ever figure out how to fix the cap situation rather than explore other ridiculous ventures then this team might be able to hope for more in this year than just the first round. 3. ... For a while I've wondered if there was a way to quantify the effectiveness of a forward's forechecking ability and the ability of a defenseman to withstand pressure from opposing forwards. Well, (huge) thanks to The Forechecker hooking me up with a spread sheet that allowed me to separate giveaways and takeaways by the zone in which they occurred, we're on our way to getting where we want to be, metric-wise. ...

It takes a little bit of work, but it’s well worth the effort. The key here is to take the scoring categories that determine your league’s weekly results, and weigh your player projections accordingly. And here come the spreadsheets. Big draft goes on Saturday afternoon. I doubt Dirk leaves his house between now and then. . Labels: ...
