I choose to not give it any significance towards signing free agents because it's hard to define what the general perception is going to be and the reasons various players have for signing. 4. Winning will always be the bottom line for: increased attendence, young players being likely to sign, free agents wanting to come to Kansas City. Of course, it was a public relations win, but unlike the refusal to trade Sweeney, PR doesn't drive this deal. *Paul Byrd was close in '01-'02, but fell short by not quite making either 100 IP or 120 ERA+ ...

... good about winter accomplishments," said Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, "I do feel good about it." Hey, Shapiro probably should feel good about it. He has an 85-win Pythag team coming back, and he has replaced Andy Marte with Mark DeRosa and added Kerry Wood. Those two moves should help. But also factoring into that 85-win calculus were quality contributions from partial seasons by C.C. Sabathia, Paul Byrd and Casey Blake. You can erase those from the 2009 edition of the ...

... Paul Byrd has been all over the place during his 13 years in the majors, but he called Philly home from 1998-2001. In '99 he represented the Phillies on the NL All-Star squad and went on to win 15 games that season. Owner of 108 wins and a 4.38 era, Byrd finds himself looking for a job this winter, as are the other hordes of free agents. Not only is Paul an accomplished starting pitcher, he's also an author. His autobiography, Free Bird, details his current life as a devout Christians and his past struggles with pornography. You gotta admit the denim top looks ...

... Hmmm. [Byrd] is certainly more plausible than Derek Lowe, and has been a solid starter in the AL for years. He'll be 38 in December, but he might be the best case scenario if we are actually going to get a veteran pitcher. Not TOO expensive, and that ERA (never above 4.88 since 2001) might even come down a bit in the NL. ...

Paul Byrd Acquired By Red Sox. Could It Be Enough for Them to Topple the Tampa Bay Rays?
Published 8/12/2008 at FanIQ Blog
The Red Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians in a post-deadline waiver deal for a player to be named later. The Red Sox are making a push to win the AL East, after seeing injuries to two key Rays players. Byrd, whose son once told him that if he were any good, the Yankees would trade for him, is 7-10 this year for the Indians, with a 4.53 ERA. Byrd was reported to have bought $25,000 worth of HGH between 2002 and 2005, which was announced last year during the Red Sox-Indians ALCS. While Byrd is probably an upgrade somewhere ...

Kenny Rogers (8-6, 4.48) vs. Paul Byrd (4-10, 5.28) Unfortunately, neither this past weekend nor the last 10 games really clarified whether or not the Tigers are truly in the AL Central race.  Yes, the numbers say they are.  6 1/2 games out is not an insurmountable lead in the last week of July.  But it's also a kind of limbo, where they're close, but maybe not quite close enough.  Four games against an Indians team that's sold off a few of its best players (Tiger Killer Casey Blake is gone!) might help them out , ...

Cleveland Picks Up Its Pitchers
Published 11/7/2007 by JC at Sabernomics
Yesterday, the Cleveland Indians picked up one-year options on three of their pitchers: Paul Byrd, Joe Borowski, and Aaron Fultz. Pitcher Option 2007 Value Paul Byrd $7.5 million $8.9 million Joe Borowski $4.0 million $3.4 million Aaron Fultz $1.5 million $2.0 million It is no surprise that the Indians picked them up. Will the HGH issues be a problem with Byrd? I doubt there is much risk since anything he did—no matter what is true ...
