And We're Back
Published 7/12/2008 by MLS Underground (noreply@blogger.com) at MLS Underground
MLS Underground is back, and under new management. This is Tom from a blog called Pitch Invasion , and we've been asked by the previous, much missed management to keep this ball rolling. We've decided to do this as the ethos of this blog matches our view on how fans need to approach soccer. During the 90 minutes of play, there's no friendship, just pure rivalry. Outside the lines, though, there's much that needs to be done together, to ensure MLS develops as a supporter-friendly league and not another consumer-orientated experience with piped in music and racing pizzas on the ...

Terry Daley of pitchinvasion.net has a super article entitled “Inside Chelsea’s Propaganda Machine.” There is a snippet below, but go read it in full, it is a great piece that says a lot about Chelsea and the current state of the game. Money quote: “Working for your club can be a pretty disillusioning experience, especially if your club is one that has become more of a corporate brand than a football club and drifting further away from its core support with each passing season as a result.” (Found via the also ...

Thoughts on Buzz Bissinger’s Apology
Published 5/5/2008 by Brian at The Run of Play
Since we took the time to criticize Buzz Bissinger for his comments about sports blogs last week, I want to take time now to give him some credit for his interview with the Big Lead today, in which he responds to the controversy, apologizes, and expresses embarrassment for his remarks. I’m not going to say that it “took a lot of courage” (it will, I assure you, be said), but for Bissinger to work out his reaction on a popular sports blog at least demonstrates a desire to talk to the right audience, and a basic willingness to see blogs as a potentially complex medium. It ...

Tom Dunsmore, the Once and Future King of all Chicago-area football blogs - and proprietor of the fantastic Pitch Invasion - has the goods yet again in this brief piece about the possibility of Peter Wilt moving back into the Fire. The good bits come courtesy of a longer piece by Jay Hipps of Center Line Soccer on his dinner with the great man this weekend. Short story shorter, it’s possible. Mmmmaybe. Could be. We’ll see. At the end of the day, though, it’s hard to see how the Fire can fail to improve under the care ...

I've copied this over from "Pitch Invasion", and will be putting up a reply to it on here later on. An open letter to Richard Scudamore, if you like. It is, I think, a critical read if you are an English football supporter. I have made a few amendments to the formatting, but every word of what is printed below is as per the original transcript. American Soccer Needs More Futsal
Published 2/29/2008 by David J. Warner at FanHouse
Filed under: Soccer, Featured StoriesSeveral weeks ago, Tom Dunmore of Pitch Invasion wrote about his trip to a Major Indoor Soccer League game in this piece for Chicago Sports Weekly, highlighting the curious combination of the world's game with typical American sports glitz. Soccer purists sometimes sneer at what they see as a bastardized version of the world's game and perhaps fear its ability to draw fans during its long and unappreciated history, seeing it as a competitor to the 11-a-side game. Unlike the outdoor ...
