Spring Training Leader Board

The longest spring training in the history of baseball is over. Teams now erase all the good, bad, and the ugly from the Cactus and Grapefruit League games and begin racking up stats and playing games that actual matter. However, let's not forget the studs of spring... ...

Notes From Bradenton
Published 3/27/2009 by seanramblings@yahoo.com (Sean) at Sean's Ramblings
Before I write about my trip to Pirates' Spring Training, Don of Mondesi's House deserves props for writing this last week: In a way, Fields has a bit of Ben Roethlisberger in him, in that he always seems to save his best for last. If ever I see Fields lining up a three-pointer with, say, three minutes or less, I'm going to say that's probably a high-percentage shot. Don proved prophetic as Levance did it again Thursday night in leading the Panthers over Xavier. Go Pitt! Anyway,I have talked about attending Spring Training for many years, but this week, I finally made it to Bradenton, ...

2009 Pirates Fantasy Baseball Preview

We at Razzball realize that exporting our views across the country has damaging consequences on the blogosphere. To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2009 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2009 Pirates Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy of Raise the Jolly Roger. 1) 2008 was a tale of two halves for Freddy Sanchez.  The 1st half was Dirty ...

News and Links
Published 2/20/2009 by Ryan (noreply@blogger.com) at Three River Sports
I've been in a posting mood the past couple days, so figured I'd put out a batch of links that I've been compiling to finish up a busy day. First a few minor news tidbits going around the Burgh recently that haven't been brought up on TRS yet:-The Steelers slapped the Ol' Franchise Tag on Max Starks. This was a bit of a surprise to see, personally. After spending the 08 season under the transition tag, I find it a little hard to believe that they will allow Starks to spend the 2009 season also under a tag. I do think its a very smart move to tag him, as no other team will bother negotiating with ...

Does it Matter if the Pirates Win in 2009?
Published 1/7/2009 at MVN RSS
For the past few weeks at Pirate Revolution, we have been considering the Pittsburgh Pirates' depth chart heading into 2009. With my first Wednesday column in the series of posts, I advocated trading Ryan Doumit, who I argued is at or near his peak and isn't likely to retain top value until the Pirates next field a winning team. The week after, I speculated on a scenario in which Adam LaRoche would be dealt. LaRoche is under the control of the Pirates through 2009, but will reach free agency after the season. Management reportedly hasn't expressed interest in signing the first baseman to a long-term ...

Baseball & Recession

... ). Or the team gets lucky (see St. Louis circa 2006). The recession eventually ends and all becomes happy again. It's cyclical. Exept in Pittsburgh . [image] For players, a recession like this one particularly hurts. First, salaries might get compressed. If you've only got a small window of opportunity (meaning years) to play and those years are bad ones for the vault of money your team controls, you never get the full benefits financially you could have received during better times. Second, the players who have made money and are still making money can get hurt just ...

The Pirates lost to Brandon Webb last night. In of itself, that's not actually very interesting because Webb is so very good.
