Walkoff Walk Presents the BONILLA Projection System: Age 35

Designated "Hitter"
Published 7/22/2008 by Patrick Sullivan at Baseball Analysts
... , hitting .225/.298/.284, started at Designated Hitter for the Seattle Mariners. When the obit is drafted for the hapless 2008 Mariners, their disregard for the defensive spectrum, for the opportunity to gain offensive punch from the 1st Base and Designated Hitter positions, should be pointed to as the primary cause of death. Maybe this is too harsh in that Richie Sexson's rapid decline could not have been foreseen, but the Mariners have moved on from Sexson with a 1B/DH combo of Cairo and ...

Duncan increasing his trade value?
Published 7/21/2008 by PHE at Pitchers Hit Eighth :: A St. Louis Cardinals blog
... It just so happens that Seattle recently came into a need for a first-baseman.  Obviously, they’re not chasing anything this season other than their own tails, so it’s not a pressing need - but with Richie Sexson released, they have a hole.  They also have a DH slot available in their lineup.  It seems Chris Duncan, still only 27, would be a great fit for the Mariners.  So maybe you don’t even give up a Parisi - maybe it’s Duncan and minor considerations beyond that.  Duncan and ...

Still, they give their due to a legendary Cub/Met/Giant/Yankee/Angel/Padre/Athletic who managed 442 HRs, 1816 Ks, and one rat mailed to a journalist. Congrats to Richie Sexson (or “Sexton” if you go by Royal Flush’s spelling), who wins the 2008 Dave Kingman award by posting 21 HRs with a .205 AVG last year in Seattle before earning his Yankee pinstripes last week. ...

Yanks add Sexson to the mix
Published 7/18/2008 by Mark Serio (noreply@blogger.com) at BASEBALL HOT CORNER
... In the good old days, when winning was the priority, the Bronx Bombers would flaunt their financial girth by going over-the-top, to win at any cost. We used to hear, "It sends a signal in the clubhouse when ownership is aggressive." Now we hear, "He's cheap and he used to be good." What kind of signal does that send? ...

The Scorecard: Richie Sexson may not be long for Seattle
Published 6/18/2008 at Big League Stew
... Also, in a somewhat-related note, am I the only one that has absolutely no recollection of Richie Sexson playing for the D'backs? I mean, I found this picture of Sexson and Bob Brenly at a photo opportunity after his trade and Baseball Reference says he played 23 games before hurting his shoulder, but I remember none of it. Oh, well, I doubt many Arizona fans do, either.  [ ...

Friday Night Musings
Published 5/10/2008 by bruce at Bruce Markusen's Cooperstown Confidential
... Over the years, I've seen some questionable instances of "charging the mound" by overly offended hitters, but none as jaw-dropping as Richie Sexson's decision to attack the Rangers' Kason Gabbard on Thursday night. Gabbard's pitch, while high, didn't come within a yard of hitting Sexson. But it nonetheless caught the attention of Sexson, who was obviously thinking about some batters who had been hit earlier in the night. MLB responded quickly by announcing a six-game suspension for Sexson, which he will appeal. I hope that the six-game ban is upheld; Sexson deserves to sit out ...

After this past weekend, I guess I had draft on my mind, and while looking at Richie Sexson's Baseball-Reference page, I took special notice of the fact that he was a 24th round pick. Isn't that a little low for a guy on the cusp of 300 home runs? ...

Planning for possible life after Mike Lowell?

... ...talk about your all-time buy lows. Terrible season in '07. However, a couple things. We could pay all the salary and give up next to nothing OR try to get the M's to pay some of the salary and give up a mid-level prospect. His BABIP was .217 last season against a career mark of .294. The only question is, was he all of a sudden cooked last year, or just extremely unlucky? Likelihood? 3/10, too many negatives despite the (likely) low price in terms of prospects. ...

... The name that keeps popping in my head: Richie Sexson. Sexson's only slugged under .500 once, and that was last year. He's 33, which isn't completely over the hill. He could bounce back. It ain't my money, it'd only be a one-year trial, and it isn't as if his salary would stop the Giants from signing anyone they really need. I keep thinking there's a way to ship Ray Durham over for Sexson, maybe with the Mariners kicking some dough back our way. Nah, I think. That isn't something Seattle fans would want. ...

Things Could Be Worse

... vorite tall-assed weird stance guy, giving the Nats' two primary pinch-hitters their first two homers of the year. It's a far cry from last year when Daryle Ward hit a pinch hit homer every other game. (Or so it seemed; my memory's a bit fuzzy). The interesting thing about today's game was that it was a giant FU to all the people clamoring for Cordero's head. Cordero was effective in two innings, shutting down the Dodgers -- guess he got those mechanical issues worked out, eh. Meanwhile, it was Luis Ayala, the man many thought should get the chance to close, who blew not one, but two leads. The team, as I've said, is teetering on the brink. These next four weeks are going to be ugly, and I'm fascinated to see 1) how Manny handles it or 2) if having your date puke all over you at then end of the night makes you forget about the good time you had in the middle. At any rate, things could be worse. Here are the players every Nats fan should be thankful we don't employ: 1b: ...
