Walkoff Walk Presents the BONILLA Projection System: Age 34

... statistical noise: we're just a bunch of jerks. Introducing the first-ever player projection forecasting system that dispenses with the OBPs and the FIPs, instead deciding to group every single player by age and write something mildly interesting about them. We call it BONILLA, or Based On Nothing Interesting, Let's Look At Age.
Click here to check out all the BONILLA age projections.
Today, in no particular order, we look at players born in 1975:

Have the Cards really missed on any free agents?

... the league minimum, with a few exceptions (I kept the three former Cardinals: Aaron Miles, Cesar Izturis, and Felipe Lopez on the list - as well as reliever Arthur Rhodes, a lefty who fit the Cards’ needs well).
Why cut it there? “Low hanging fruit,” my friend. If we’re trying to appease the masses here, I think it safe to assume the masses wouldn’t be interested in competing to ink the Carl Pavano’s and Russell Branyan’s of the league.
That being said, there is some ...
Huntington: Neil Walker Could Compete for Starting Third Base Job
Published 9/26/2008 by Charlie at Bucs Dugout
... What I suspect we will actually see is that the Pirates will acquire some cheap free agent, possibly on a minor league contract, to fill in for a while in case LaRoche can't put himself together. Russell Branyan would be excellent--he hits very well, is left-handed, and can also fake his way around in the outfield corners or at first. He can't field, but that's okay. At the very least, he could spell LaRoche against tough righties and let LaRoche pile up a disproportionate number of at bats against lefties. He's not really a pull hitter, but he did hit a bunch of homers to ...

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 (6/17/2008 08:18:00 PM) - Al It is just astounding that not a single team looked at Russell Branyan this past offseason and thought, hmm, platoon 3B? LF? DH? Lefty bat with power off the bench? I mean, the guy is a .330/.490 career hitter, and while not a magician with the glove, makes the routine play. Even Billy Beane, with an injured Eric Chavez, did not offer him a non-roster invite to spring training, so Russ chose to sign with the Brewers, where he could play at home in Nashville, and while no one has said it, but I'm sure played a role, knew ...

Also, anything that causes someone whose B-R page is sponsored by the Rob Deer Fan Club to get more ABs is probably a good move. ...
Bill Hall is Angry

... Hall should probably research his usurper a bit. For as much as statheads have crushed on Branyan over the years, he hasn't exactly been a job-stealer. He's been on eight teams over the course of his career, hasn't stuck around for 100 at bats on any of them since 2001. He'll crush the ball when he hits it, but he has a knack for wearing out his welcome quickly. I'm still not convinced that he can't be an important part of a winning team, but given the pressure on Yost, Branyan will be cut the first time he goes 0-5 and strikes out four times. Wait, ...
3rd Base Re-Visited Once Again

... - Signed thru 2009 for about 3.5 Million. Utility player who can play everywhere but SS and 1st base. Has a hard time staying healthy but he might make a decent option. No power but had 3 straight years from 2004-2006 with an OB% above 360, twice topping 370. When LaRoche returns he'd make an excellent utility player. Russ Branyan - Dunn Lite as a 3rd baseman. Should never be allowed to face LHP and his fielding is Kent like. He'll hit a home run now and then and walk now and then in between his gazillion strikeouts. ...
Where Are They Now: Top Prospects of ‘98, #21-30

... Russell Branyan, 3B, Cleveland Indians. Branyan probably deserved a better career than he’s had. Unfortunately, he strikes out at a legendary rate, and many decision makers view that particular type of out as worse than other types. The Indians tabbed Branyan with their seventh-round pick in the 1994 draft. In ‘96 he put himself on the prospect map by launching 40 homers in the South Atlantic League. The next year, he pounded 39 more in the Carolina and Eastern Leagues. Branyan got cups of coffee with the big club in ‘98 and ‘99, and ...

Phils Pickup Russell Branyan
Published 8/9/2007 by Doc at Balls, Sticks, & Stuff | Phillies, Eagles, golf and other matters of great importance...
... that the Phillies have acuired Russell Branyan from the Indians for cash. Branyan bats left and plays some third base, so the thinking is probably to get more power out of third base. Indeed, Branyan's page at baseball-reference.com is sponsored by the " Rob Deer Fanclub " because of the tendency for his at-bats to result in one of the three true outcomes: strikeout, homerun, or walk. In other words, the defense rests when Branyan comes to the batter's box. His career batting average is .229 and the highest it has ever been for a season is .232. But by the same token, his OPS -- a statistic which correlates much better with run production than batting average -- typically hovers around average to slightly above average (career 107 OPS+). This would be a marked improvement over the Phillies third basemen this year, whose collective OPS is approximately half of today's heat index. Branyan comes in return for very little, ...
Roster Idea
Published 7/28/2007 by ubelmann at The WGOM
... today. Branyan is far from an ideal player. He has little-to-no defensive value, strikes out a lot, and doesn t hit for a high average. BUT Branyan has one very major league tool he can hit for power. His isolated slugging of .229 this year puts him near hitters such as David Ortiz, Alex Rios, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Lee, Troy Glaus, and Magglio Ordonez in that category. And even while Branyan hits for a very low average, he still walks enough that his OBP is acceptable sitting in the .320-.330 range the last four years. (Basically, Branyan has been doing what the Twins claimed that Garrett Jones could do.) So far this season, Twins DH s have hit .256/.329/.357 sort of like Branyan but with a little more average and a LOT less power. Currently, the Twins have no left-handed power threats on the bench. So I propose this: get rid of Jason Tyner or Luis Rodriguez and put Branyan on the 25-man roster. Branyan s not real ...
