So, Are the Nats Better Off?

... analysis of Cabrera, click here. His K/9, K/BB, quality starts, WHIP and ERA are all going in the wrong direction, as is his velocity.
Redding is no "ace", but at least his skill set is defined. Cabrera was always lousy and now he's getting worse, either from injury or simple attrition. He'll get some benefit from facing a pitcher twice a start, but I'd also be ready for many more walks to pitchers keeping an inning going.
Which brings us to Scott Olsen, who replaces Odalis Perez (if the Nats still don't re-sign ...

He started game 3 of the NLCS against the Braves. He didn’t get the win but the Marlins did. Later had a horrific injury that broke his arm and ended his career. Jose Canseco said it was because of steroid use… which means it was. SCOTT OLSEN Had a surprising 12-10 season for the 2006 Marlins that helped Joe Girardi win ...
Catching Up on Recent Trades

... In the minors, Gonzalez walked too little and struck out too much. He appears to be a good-enough defender to play center field, and he’s young. Smith is on a path to be a back-of-the-rotation starter. Gonzalez and Smith could blossom into much better players or wash out of the league within a few years. The trade appears to be good match for both teams, which is no surprised to this economist.

... and starting pitcher Scott Olsen . Confused? Yeah me to, here are my concerns about the trade that APPEARS to be very one sided to the Nationals favor . Why would any team, especially one in their own division, trade a starting pitcher who has topped 30 starts and 175 innings in their first three seasons and is only 24 years old? Why would a team jettison two power hitters in a span of two weeks as the Marlins did in Mike Jacobs (32 HR in 2008) and Josh Willingham (21 in 2007) unless they had stud in the minors (they might, not sure) or they were flawed? Why would a team who ...

Does Joe Girardi Destroy Young Pitchers?
Published 2/19/2008 by Moshe Mandel at New York Yankees
... Scott Olsen: Olsen has an interesting history. In 2004, he pitched 136 minor league innings. He had injuries in 2005 that limited him to 100.4, and he then jumped to 186.7 innings in 2006. His 2005 injuries skew the numbers a bit, and I would have pegged Olsen for an increase to about 150 innings in 2006, meaning he had a similar problem as Sanchez. As I said earlier, this can in a large part be placed at the doorstep of the front office, but Girardi cannot be entirely absolved. Olsen exceeded 7 innings four times in 31 starts, and surpassed 110 pitches four ...
