... Byrnes .• Scott Boras is going to convince some team to invest $50 million in Stephen Strasburg? Sure … and Boras is going to get $100 million for Manny Ramirez , too. Sure, Strasburg will probably set a new record for a draft pick. Maybe by a lot. But nobody's spending anything like $50 million on a guy who hasn't yet thrown a professional pitch.• Sophisticated fielding metrics are garbage . You know how I know? Because Nate McLouth says so .• Despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary, Shawn Estes really does believe he's ...

Spring Training Jobs Up For Grabs
Published 2/11/2009 by Eric Stephen at True Blue LA
... Torre hasn't taken a liking to Stults, banishing him for two months after only one bad start in Coors Field, despite a relatively strong showing in his five previous starts.  Stults seems destined to be the insurance starter at AAA, but the Dodgers could do worse for a 5th starter. If I had to guess, I say Stults will make at least 10 starts for the Dodgers this year, especially since the injury-prone Schmidt and Vargas are ahead of him on the depth chart. 5) Shawn Estes Signed to a minor league deal, Estes seems like a long shot to make the ...

Estes One Step Closer to Rarefied Air of NL West Journeymen

Steve Finley. Matt Herges. Members of an exclusive club, to be sure. A club of baseball players who have never dated Alyssa Milano? No. Both Finley and Herges became the first players to have played for all five NL West teams when they joined Colorado in 2007. And now this Dynamic Duo might become a Terrible Threesome. The Dodgers signed Shawn Estes to a minor-league contract earlier today. Should Estes make the club, he could earn up to $1.55 million—and more importantly, join the ...

Estes returns to the mound
Published 2/25/2008 by Jim at FriarBall
Well it looks like the search for a No. 5 starter is about to get a little more crowded, and a little more fragile, as Shawn Estes makes a long-awaited return to the mound in the Cactus League opener on Friday against Kansas City. It's been almost two seasons since Estes last pitched for SD and I'm sure that many casual fans are wondering either who this guy is or are probably thought Estes has retired. Looking at Estes' career stats on baseball-reference.com, he was an All Star in 1997 and owns a career record of 99-90 with a 4.71 ERA in ...

Glendon Rusch, Shawn Estes Upstaged

San Diego native Mark Prior signed a one-year deal with the Padres on Wednesday, joining two other, health-challenged former Cubs, Glendon Rusch and Shawn Estes, in an attempt to make manager Bud Black's staff for 2008. The San Diego Union-Tribune says Prior is only guaranteed to receive $1MM from his new team, but that he could earn up to $3.5MM in bonuses, "including $1 million for being on the Padres' 25-man roster throughout the 2008 season and up to another $2.25 million for making 30 starts." No one--not Prior, not even his agent, ...
