The Big Questions

... Cuttino Mobley turned 33 on Labor Day. The durable Mobley – who John Hollinger once called “The Steve Trachsel of the NBA” – Trachsel was baseball’s consummate innings-eater -- started to show the creaking wear of age last season. Even at his advanced age, Mobley still isn’t the first guy an opposing shooting guard wants to see alongside him at tipoff…but he’s not the last either. ...

... . We're starting to get to the point where it may be time to admit that Perez is just not that good, and that those two good seasons he's had were more flukish instances of him being able to put a solid string of starts together rather than the true talent bubbling to the surface. Pitchers like Steve Trachsel and ...

... is mildly intriguing if unproven, and when retread Steve Trachsel is your fourth starter, well, you don't really have a fourth starter at all, do you? On the plus side, Sherrill, the new closer acquired in the Bedard deal with Seattle, is capable of handling the job promotion; he had a 0.99 WHIP setting up J.J. Putz last season. And at least the Orioles probably won't give up 30 runs in a single game again. Hey, small steps. ...

... That was my reaction when the Cubs traded for Steve Trachsel on Friday. I have so many memories of Trachsel, some good, some bad. Actually, the bad mostly outweigh the good. ... - Shields came two outs short of pitching a complete-game shutout against the A's in his last start Friday night. The Rays right-hander surrendered a two-run homer to Dan Johnson with one out in the ninth to end the shutout and prompt a call to the bullpen. Nevertheless, Shields continued to do what he does best: mixing four quality pitches while pounding the strike zone. He is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA in five starts against the Orioles. Steve Trachsel - Trachsel put together one of his best outings of the season in his last start, but he couldn't earn a win. He shut down the Twins and surrendered one earned run and one unearned run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings, but lost due to the runs charged to him after he left. Nevertheless, the game marked Trachsel's first in his last 10 that he's completed seven innings. He's having a great month despite his 1-1 record in five starts, as his August ERA is 2.53, his best monthly mark ...

So, as you can see, at this point already there might be as many as a dozen useful relievers available for trade. The Cubs should definitely pursue one or two of these guys. The next big issue remains the #5 starter. At this point, guys like Angel Guzman and Sean Marshall have been sharing the job, and they haven ' t done poorly. However, if the Cubs are going to compete, I would recommend that they go after a veteran starter who ' s been there before and might get them there again. Here ' s another list of guys who might be available because they are older and are playing on losing teams: Steve Traschel (5-4, 3.82 ERA, 36-years-old). Eh... pass. Look, I won ' t contest that Traschel has put together a respectable, if not somewhat boring career. He ' s not a great pitcher, and while he ' d be a suitable #5 guy, I c ...
