What Will a Billion Buy You?
Published 3/13/2009 by Mike Silva at Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest
Obviously not a championship for the Mets. Maury Brown over at the Biz of Baseball breaks down the total payroll investment for each team over the last ten years (1999-2008). The Yankees and Red Sox have also gone over the “billion mark” with 1.6 and 1.1 respectively.
Makes any Mets fans argument that the Yankees spend too much money moot. On the flip side the bottom three spenders were Pittsburgh, Tampa, and of course Florida. Alex Rodriguez will make almost as much in 10 years as these clubs spend.
You can read the entire list here.
“POD ’10” – Snapping Up a Franchise
Published 3/12/2009 by Kurt Hunzeker at Seamheads.com
... A new ballpark is not happening. Fans are staying away from games and the souvenir stands. The Brewers made the decision who to back inside state lines, and it’s not Beloit.
It’s time for a fresh start.
It’s time for the Snappers’ franchise to reinvent itself.
It’s time for the team to become an integral member of a nation.
And not just any nation.
A Cardinal Nation.

Sunday Reading

... far the lightest day of the week for reading. I reacted to Bud Selig's latest craven attempt to refuse any responsibility for the steroid era. If you missed it Saturday, please check it out and let me know what you think about it. I think Major League Baseball made a huge mistake tying themselves to Selig through 2012, and only by turning the page with a new Commissioner will we ever turn the page on the steroid era.
Finally, Maury Brown, the man behind the terrific Biz of Baseball web site, takes Selig to task with some important points here and ...
