For those of you who missed it -- or for those of you who ate so much pie over the past view days your synapses ceased firing -- a reminder: ShysterBall is moving to The Hardball Times Monday morning. If things go right, clicking your usual ShysterBall bookmark should redirect you to the New and Improved ShysterBall automatically. In the likely event I screw that up, the new URL is: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/shysterballThere's only some old junk there now. New stuff should show up early Monday morning. ...

... to a player’s overall contribution, both with the bat and glove. As you’ll note below, numbers slightly differ for DH’s, and are further separated for catchers. I’ve also slightly tweaked established indexes to compensate for the stats I’ve chosen. The equation, working through a 1-5 scale (but cut more than half for Catchers*), works in the following way: Runs + RBI + Stolen Bases - Caught Stealing + Walks - Strikeouts + Total Bases - Errors = __________ That number is then added to The Hardball Times’ ...

... many more (or less) balls a player converts into an out than the average. Players who get to balls below the average receive negative ratings. Adam Everett led all shortstops in the major leagues from 2005-2007 with a +92 rating (Jason Bartlett was second with a +45.) While I'd love to use these stats, it's not possible since Matt Tolbert's numbers aren't available. So we need to find another way of doing this. Getting back to setting up our own system... First, I'll be using The Hardball Times fielding stats. A basic fielding stats primer: ZR= Zone Rating BIZ= ...

The Hardball Times flagged this fascinating story by Alan Schwarz in Tuesday's New York Times, a description of the work of Swarthmore College mathematician and avid Yankees fan Steve Wang. Employing an analytical method called Chernoff faces, in which data are represented by varying heights, widths, and angles in images of human faces, Wang reflects the strategic tendencies of all 30 Major League managers from the 2007 season. If I understand the explanation of Wang's analysis, the Piniella Chernoff face suggests Lou's ...
Fun with Box Scores
Published 4/1/2008 by Jason at
I saw this cool thing mentioned over at The Hardball Times - a daily, downloadable box score report called the “The Rundown” from Heater, the online baseball magazine. In addition to the MLB boxes, you get all of the other professional sports as well. It either comes free with a subscription to Heater or costs just $9.95 for the year which I think is a great deal.
Check it out if you get a chance!
