Dirk Kuyt, by Francisco Goya?
Published 3/12/2009 by nate (noreply@blogger.com) at oh you beauty
Quick pop in. I can't believe I haven't linked Run of Play before (I blame my laziness, but it could also be ignorance), but I adore this post about Kuyt. Long story short, Kuyt = Goya paintings. I can't do it justice by summing it up. It's poetry. His face would make Dora Maar squirm in her chair. He lumbers around the pitch like Igor, eager to please but shunned by fleet-footed teammates. Yet he scores goals. Benítez defends him using the 21st century discourse of efficiency. I extol him for playing as if in a Goya painting. Kuyt is ...

Arshavin makes my head hurt

... Then, when prompted with what one can do with a Blackberry, suddenly Nicklas Bendtner is the only person on the planet who either has a Blackberry or emailing capabilities. And since when can you only use email to ask someone how they’re doing? I just — AHHHHH! I think my brain is eating itself! Oh, and: I’m pretty sure that was a total burn on Nicklas Bendtner. Haha, who doesn’t hate that guy? [Source: Sam Levenback via Run of Play]

Soccer enthusiasts no doubt already hail Brian and his work; if you don't know the first thing about the sport, be advised that RoP is the closest FD gets to a sister site. Or blood brothers across time and space. Earlier: The ...

... Brian Phillips. Run Of Play is like one of those independent Brit bands that few people have heard of but has a strong underground following and knows how to bang out a tune. Brian Philiips is definitely an up-and-comer and one to watch out for with his delightfully designed website, intelligent topics and hidden gems strewn throughout its pages. ...

... a good writer is still hard to find. Other sites are catching up though, providing more blogs and improved reader interaction.  Just how long the mainstream football media can lord it over the rest of us remains to be seen, but for now mainstream bloggers are still among the best on the Internet, an encouraging sign for professional hacks everywhere.  Here are five mainstream bloggers who stood out in 2008. I’d like to thank Soccerlens award-winners Run of Play’s Brian Philips and Sport is a TV Show’s Fredorrarci for their help ...

Extra Time: European Football’s Battle With The Time Zone
Published 8/19/2008 by Richard Whittall at Pitch Invasion
... AM. Games are watched over coffee, eggs, toast, and bacon. Traditionalists will wait an agonizing hour or two at the local pub eyeing the flat screen until beer can be served, but most of the time, matches are enjoyed at home in the quiet of a Saturday morning. For this reason, European soccer in Canada and the US tends to be a more solitary affair. The sobriety of the dawn helps reveal the game’s many idiosyncrasies. It’s hard, for instance, to imagine something like Brian Phillip’s Run of Play getting written in the haze of a laddish, ...

BLOGGER INTERVIEW! :: The Run of Play
Published 6/4/2008 by Zach Dundas (noreply@blogger.com) at du Nord
... I've spent a lot of time trying to work out how much I need to cover the news and how to set the balance between more abstract or conceptual posts and posts that rely on more conventional argument and opinion. I go through phases when I feel like I need to cover every transfer story and phases when it seems okay to spend a week ignoring the rest of the soccer world and writing strange fantasias about the email autoreply system at Arsenal. I've probably felt more free to do the latter as the ...

... Was outstanding in Egypt’s semi-final win over Cote d’Ivoire, denying Didier Drogba several times. Was also rock solid in the final. Carlos Kameni is worth a mention, his seemingly endless string of reflex saves in the final drawing this brilliant description from The Run of Play’s Brian: “It’s unreal. He looks like Iker Casillas crossed with Optimus Prime.” Angola’s Lamá also produced plenty of impressive reflex saves, but had a vampire like aversion to crosses. Though Al-Hadary wasn’t as flashy he ...
