The Road to 17: Flashback
Published 3/31/2009 at Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke?
... I was born two and a half years after Pops retired, and so the Stargell that occupies my mind's eye has always been the one on the cover with Bradshaw; the aging, rounding, jovial superstar that laughed and bashed his team to a World Series in 1979. This Stargell was someone different. I went to Baseball Reference and looked up his stat line: .295/.398/.628 with 48 homers, 26 doubles, and 125 RBIs in 1971. The man was an unstoppable force. ...

... in the first two months of the season and Willie Stargell in the last two, so the Pirates should be able to market him as a game-changing slugger at the trade deadline whether or not he hits early in the season. Grabow has become a solid lefty setup man and should bring back a couple of prospects at the deadline, if not well before; the Pirates are currently listening to offers. Will this front office lead the Pirates back to respectability? The Pirates' front office, headed by team president Frank Coonelly and general manager Neal Huntington, appears to be pursuing the ...

A fan favorite who runs a barbecue in the new PNC in Pittsburgh, he was the only Pirate not to attend Roberto Clemente's funeral. Why wasn't he there? He was with a group of divers looking for Clemente. He didn't believe he was really gone. ... I don't know if I'd compare Ryan Howard to Willie Stargell just yet, after all, Stargell hit .282 over 21 seasons (1962-82) in the Majors with 475 HR's and 1,540 RBI's, but...Stargell never put up numbers for the Pirates like Howard did for Pennsylvania's second-favorite Phillies in 2006, when Howard hit 58 HR's, with a .313 AVG and 149 RBI's, while Stargell's single-season highs are the 48 HR's and 125 RBI's he put up in 1975 and the .315 AVG he hit for back in '66, but it is safe to say that each was the premier slugger opposing pitchers had ...

Card Corner--Wilver Dornell Stargell
Published 7/3/2008 by bruce at Bruce Markusen's Cooperstown Confidential
... As a young baseball fan growing up in the 1970s, I liked and admired Willie Stargell so much that I was once motivated to do something very foolish: at the age of nine, I stole his elusive 1974 baseball card from my next door neighbor's house. (I'm not sure why I became so infatuated with the 1974 card. I actually liked the 1973 card, pictured here, a lot more, since it was an action shot, showing a massive Stargell stretching to receive a throw at first base ahead of the arrival of Philadelphia's Del Unser. I also preferred the 1973 card of Bobby Bonds, which features an ...

As you can imagine I've been spending some time in Pittsburgh over the last few weeks and so just a couple of photos today. The first looks back at PNC park from the Roberto Clemente bridge and the second is of the Willie Stargell statue that was unveiled in 2001 and sits on the Federal street (left field) side of the ballpark.

Top 100 Baseball Players of All-Time

... Sporting News Pitcher of the Year three times. He led the AL in wins three times. His ERA+ is 10th all-time (min. 3,000 innings) among pitchers who pitched after 1900. It's no coincidence that the nine pitchers ahead of him on that list are also ahead of him on this list. I may have even underrated Ford at 61. He didn't come close to 300 wins which is, of course, the "magic" mark for pitchers. Still, Ford has few equals among pitchers in MLB history. 62) Willie Stargell There seems to be a belief among baseball experts that Willie McCovey was a better ...
